2017 F2C Team Selection
« on: November 16, 2016, 07:04:06 PM »
AMA has approved of July 22&23 for the F2C team trials at Muncie. This will be at the end of the NATS CL week. I believe the team selection committee still has to approve the bid for the event, though.

Last time there were six entries for three positions.

In the world of F, basically you win the right to be on the team and maybe a few bucks from AMA.

Back in the day of free USAF hops, the members of the 8 teams got a pretty-much full ride.
Now there must be about 20 events with three members and a junior for each event.  AMA can't even come close to funding all of them.

Are there more than 3 teams in the USA? What do you get if you qualify?

MM

The AMA pays for the entry fee and housing and meals during the duration of the Championships.  There is an allowance provided that generally does not come close to pay for the plane ticket to wherever.  Other transportation costs, like a car or sharing a car with another team member or team members, housing/meals for days not during the competition, uniform costs, fuel (whatever you use - bring your own which is a major problem or purchase standard ingredients ordered prior to the contest from the organizers, make arrangements to have fuel delivered which can be another major problem), batteries and their transportation (which can be a major problem), etc, are all out of pocket.  Sometimes, the SIGs provide some financial assistance. Also, some team organizers will have fund raising programs like selling team shirts, hats, patches and/or outright donations.  This is not a joy ride paid for by the AMA and the SIGs.

The AMA is also placing a premium on team performance.  The AMA can decide that if the collective performance of teams in a specific event over some period does not meet some "standard" in the world competitions, then the AMA will no longer sponsor a US team in that event.  That has not yet happened in any of our control line events -F2A, F2B, F2C, or F2D.  I do not know about any of the multitude of other team events regarding this.

seems reasonable considering most of the ama membership does not know what F2c, F2A, F2b is. We're lucky we still have u/c represented in ama for insurance.

And another thing.  The AMA does not recognize that the F2D Combat team should consist of the pilot and pitman as it does for the F2C Racing team.  The AMA pays for the pilot registration/housing/meals but not the pitman or any of the expenses the real combat team must take care of.

Again, making the US team in any event is not a paid vacation.

A pilot in an F2D competition really has his hands full. You need a good pit man and ideally a coach to work out the instant strategy required to win in a high level match. It's intense and demanding on the pilot so the pitman becomes key to any chance of a win.

Good thing the F2D guys are all indipendently wealthy, with all those fancy engines, ARF's and such!    :P
