Title: How about timer settings?
Post by: Randy Powell on May 14, 2013, 09:25:56 AM
So, what setting are used, generally, for Will's FM9 timer?

phoenix high rpm
5 min 25 sec flight time
15 sec delay
8900 rpm
seems to work fine for me on the e32   jim

Thanks, Jim. It was mostly the ESC setting I was curious about.

Randy, you know about Norm's cookbook right?

Randy,
Hubins timer will work on several different manufacturers ESC's that is why you see different setting choices. Re read the instructions that come with the FM9. My Castle Ice Lite 50's like  Phoenix Hi gov mode. Castle is Phoenix.

I use a 30 second delay, 5 minute 30 second run time, Phoenix High Rpm, and 9624 rpm with a 13 x 5.5 WEP cut down to 12 inches.  I use a Phoenix 45.

I'm basically copying Alan Resinger's settings (since I have the same setup overall) but I forgot to ask about the timer. I assume the Phoenix High setting, but thought I should ask.

Phoenix High is right and RPM setting will depend on the prop.  I use the APC 13 X 6.5 with and RPM setting of 8570.  Most of you guys that fly the wrong way and use pushers can opt for less pitch, like 5.5 and be in the mid 9000 range.

Larry,
I was wondering why there seemed to be so many people driving the wrong direction in my lanes, as I'm heading down I-5.  It's really tiring dodging all those cars.

So do you set the rpm with the timer or the ESC or both?

Randy,

How you program the FM-9 depends entirely on what ESC you are using and how you have programmed that ESC.

For instance if you are using a Castle Creations Phoenix ESC you have choices of how you program it. If you program it to Control Line Governor Mode with a "Set RPM" option. Then you can select three different RPMs and the FM-9 timer will then be programmed to select one of those three RPMs. If you wish to use one of the other RPMs you will need to reprogram the FM-9 timer (it only takes a few seconds to reprogram the timer). If those three RPMs don't suit you then you would have to reprogram the ESC to new RPMs.

For simple (also inexpensive) ESCs you can use the FM-9 to set the RPM through out the range of of the throttle.

Tell us what ESC you plan to use and then you will get some answers as to how to set up the ESC/FM-9 combination.

John,

FM9 timer and Castle Creations ICE Lite 75 ESC.

Randy,

That sounds like a good choice!!

Peter Germann very recently posted his specifications for just that combination (CC ICE 75 and FM-9). He is using the the:
Vehicle = Control Line, Throttle type = Governor Mode, Governor Mode = Governor High.

For this set of parameters you would program the FM-9 as follows:
Start the program mode using the Hubin Programmer
Set the Flight Time
Set the Delay time
Scroll up or down to get to:
Phoenix HIGH RPM and OK that mode
Set the RPM which you wish to use and OK that RPM
The timer is now programmed.
Easy to do and if you wish to change the RPM you just reprogram the FM-9 to a new RPM.  ;D

Here are the Parameters that Peter is using:

Airplane (Derivate of Igor Burger's Max Bee)
Span: 61 in
