gain on KR timer?

(1/1)

Charles Hofacker:
What is the "gain" function on a KR timer? and if you use a KR timer what is your gain setting?

pmackenzie:
Gain adds boost in the corners,as explained on the Keith's web site:

I can't help with setting though,I have not used a KR timer (yet)  :)

The default gain setting is "1" which is little to no gain.  I have mine set on one plane at "4" and another plane at "5".  It's easy to change between flights, but the higher gain setting yields more RPM when going through maneuvers that draw additional current from the motor, so the planes' speed is constant and the lines stay tight all the time, or at least that's what you hope for!!

Matt Piatkowski:
Hello,
The gain parameter in KR timer is a "double edge sword".
Increasing it's numerical value will add RPM when the system wants to draw more current, for example when the model is entering the Wing-over.
Unfortunately, this RPM increase is not reasonably stable for higher gain parameter values while the model is climbing.

There exists RPM fluctuations that are clearly audible.

This has to do with the dynamic properties of the PID systems.

The highest gain I consider acceptable is 4.

Ray Nyce:
I use KR timers on all my planes and for about 10 years now
.  combat and stunt.
I look at the gain as allowing me to fly slower in level flight which is very helpful.
The gain then powers you up to enough power for the maneuvers.
My standard setting is 4.
When I set the gain too high, my system starts to oscillate- i.e. it speeds up, then slows down in about 5 second cycles.
4 is just right for my planes and has not been a problem.
Set to 5, I get into the oscillating scenario half the time.
