I had two of these engines. A powerhouse.

I sold one NIB it went to Australia.

I may still have a few mufflers NIB for this engine.

Had one on an R/C delta with tuned pipe and 'good fuel' it did 170/5 consistently. I sold the engine last year. It was still in great condition.

Matt,

I'm in GA and the mufflers are in FL. I'll be home in a week. I'll take a photo then. I believe I have a few. I would need the footprint measurement to determine what goes with what.

My other engine went sold with the plane.

Yes, I bought that one Charles and its yet to be played with.

But I have it on good authority that they will four stroke nicely if run rich enough.

I dreamt of lowering the deck height to make it more friendly but alas that's not possible due to the  design.

Destined for use (one day) with an MVVS 49 tuned muffler running a longer header pipe.

Good morning

During the early 1980s (1982-1983) I used the X45 on a stunt plane.
At that time to soften a bit of the pure engine's temperament I had lowered the cylinder (and consequently the exhaust port) by removing almost all the collar highlighted in the picture
I do not remember getting up the transfer ports.
I used an OPS muffler
Venturi of 4.5 mm diameter
Fuel 20-5-75 all castor
Propeller 12 x6
The engine had power to sell.
Unfortunately he suffered very hot days and humidity, today I would try to increase the nitro to bring it to a constant 4-stroke.
I do not remember to have ever used it on very windy days, so I have no idea of its behavior in this situation.
Personally today do not waste resources unnecessarily.
There are many better engines out there
I hope this helps.

Regards, Massimo

Massimo, my engine has about .005 clearance between the top of the liner and the head hence my comment about not being able to lower it at all. If I took the collar off the piston crown would be exposed above the top of the liner and the engine would be ruined.

Perhaps you have a different model to mine (although it looks the same.)

Thanks.

No, simply after having removed the material under the collar of the cylinder was enough to add an equivalent thickness under the head.
I subsequently made a modified head.
In any case, despite this and other tests I've never managed to get a satisfactory reliability ....

Regards, Massimo

After:

I apologize, I think I've only understood it now.
In my engine the head went into the cylinder as in the old ST46.
If I understood yours properly it would have to be a succession with the head that did not enter the cylinder.
Count carter fins: 3 vs. 5
My head was quadrangular, your was round.

Indeed , late one has 10 degrees more hexhaust timing too , for a tooned pipe high rpm set up , 160 degrees even , Early One like First Photo has 150 Ex .

Thanks for your advice , Massimo . I was offered a couple of them , but seems theyre the late ones , They look a bit underfined compared to later ST's .
Ive seen a few were used in NZ years back , but not aware of how they went . Not Short of powerplants , so will pass on these , Even if they ARE Super Tigres .

Yep, I see that there are two different engines now and mine is the 3 fin carter round head version.

Thanks Massimo.

Hi Matt

I have a X45RE but would not try it on a stunt model due to the timing but I do like the look of it and the X60 and X61. Did try a K&B 6.5 on a stunt model which was a total waste of time as the timing was way to radical to tam without loosing all the power. But me and my brother Karl had a lot of good stunt flying out of the early round head Super Tigre ABC S40 and a ringed S45's . Much easier to tune and light and powerful with good sized prop turning ability. In fact the e S45 seems a nicer engine to run then my wife's G51 which is more tricky on her ME109 (69oz 700inch). Regards Gerald

Matt,

Are you still interested in muffler photos?

Yea , if inline suckers . Not the transvers K&B SR is factory one .

Gene Martine ran one in his Mariner , with a ' home made ' compact muffler .

This of course means you will win concourse , if you use a X 45 .  ;D

Bit the Bullet & ' Aquired ' it .This should keep Brett in amunition .  Figure a VF rod will drop the timing to 144 odd . Its + 1/2 mm - 20 Thou. .

Looks Intresting . Thinking of putting the 45 in a Spitfire ive got framed up ,
The scaleish exhausts with a floor & that or one Id cobbled up ,
would get the smoke coming out the sides there .

Thanks for the picture .  H^^

p.s. ' My Man ' off who of which Ive got the injun , has hooked a new VF rod for me , Their last in stock .

This is 20 thou longer than the ST rod , so saves / equivilates dropping the liner 0.5 m.m.
My calcs get that at 144 Ex ( ish ) from 152 . maybe 143.5 ish , leaving out angularity and sine curves etc .

Ha , thats the ' Mk VIII ' Merlin fuse anyway . with the Eliptical Wing from my ' Griffon ' Mk 14 / 19 Fuse which is longer .
This as is'd do it . Finished of course .

End Dia's are the same , hopefully the clearances are korekt . If the Big End Width lengthwise is over , itd be better than under .

We shall see . No Doubt . Give it a few weeks for delivery .

Was thinking the ' plank wing ' one . But This might be the go . 4 in pitch prop to ' lock it in ' . Thats the theory anyway .

Matt,

Muffler could be altered if you're clever. That exhaust tube could go out either side or both sides or the back. Plus it could be shortened.

It's NIB but I have no box.  ;D
