Title: Which stand alone glow plug igniter should I purchase?
Post by: frank mccune on November 15, 2018, 10:43:32 AM
       Hi All:

My flying Mate and I are attempting to simplify the amount of kit that we take to the circle for engine starting.  We have been motivated by a new flying partner who only takes a leather glove and a self contained glow plug igniter.  Very basic sans fuel bottles, wires etc.

What brand of a glow plug igniter would you suggest?  Some people have suggested "the orange one" what ever brand that is.

     Suggestions/comments?

                                                                                                                             Frank McCune

The sonic-tronics is what I use. It's great. But if you don't want to buy something new, give me your address. I have a nice aluminium one with a replaceable battery I'll send you. I even replaced the battery a few weeks ago. So it's like new.

I've only had it for a year, but the cheap Tower Hobbies glow igniter with Meter has worked great for me. Part Number LXLN91, $21.99.

I have to agree.  For the investment, they are the best value, I believe!

I actually prefer the DuBro ignitor with the replaceable battery, but that's all I've ever owned. There are some hop-up battery options out there. I've tried NiMH as well as NiCads. The NiMH batteries have some nice features, but they always seemed to be flat when I went flying. Holding the charge is their weak point. NiCads are currently the best option in sub-C size.

Some like the twist-on and some don't...I think it's what you get used to, so stick with it. A few guys around here are big fans of the RCats setup...but they're not cheap enough for me....I'm more likely to wire up a bunch of Alkaline D cells in parallel with as short a section of lamp cord as is practical.  D>K Steve

I like the AA ones with an Eneloop AA battery. The Eneloop battery last a long time before I have to charge again. I get one flip starts most of the times.  Other NiMH batteries didn´t work very well.

Does Du-Bro make one with a replaceable battery?  From what I can see, their current line-up does not have them.

RCATS for me—especially if there is any problem.

I'm not a fan of the Sonic Tronics glow plug clip as, for some of my models, the push and twist action makes removing the clip a two-handed operation.

However, the connection between the clip and the RCATS cable is a standard RCA audio socket.

I have made up adapters with alligator clips and a spring loaded clip.

When I start using mini banana plugs and remote glow plug leads, I will make up another adapter to suit. It's dead easy to swap connectors as required.
