ASP .60??
« on: January 13, 2016, 07:16:22 AM »
    Hello:

Anybody ever use one of these engines? If so what are your impressions of this engine? What would be a fair price for a used one?

                                                                                                                               Thanks in advance,

                                                                                                                               Frank McCune

For CL? It appears that the same casting is used for the .61, .75 and .91, so you can bet that the .61 will be really heavy. Pretty sure they're ringed, another fly in the ointment, IMO. Or where one might source a decently light tube muffler. You might try to research the three engines as Magnums at Hobby People and see if you don't agree. Not that it might not work, but then again, it might not work.  ;) Steve

ASP is hit and miss (mostly miss) as far as piston fit plus the crankshaft is made from softer material (that's why it's big) and it's a heavy engine overall, other than that they wear out kind'a fast and did I mention the crap bearings they come with. You can tremendously increase the power on the side exhaust model by cutting dog house openings front and back in the piston skirt if you want it to die faster.

     Hi:

I got the ASP .61 engine from a friend of mine and discovered that the bearings were rusted into two masses of rust.

I replaced the bearings with new ones, $15.00,and cleaned all of the burned on carbon from the piston, sleeve and head and reassembled it.  The engine is an ABC type that has a great p&c fit.  Overall, the fit and finish looked quite good.  I will test it today on to see if it is as good as it looks. I will post the results here.  I have not weighed it but it does appear to be quite heavy.   What am I going to do with this beast? Lol

Motorman, you said the cranks were made from a soft steel.  Did you do any testing to determine this? If so what methods did you use?

                                                                                                           Be well,

                                                                                                           Frank McCune

Let me know what you find out with regards to this engine as I was about to ask about it as well. I am looking at purchasing two and getting venturis and nva for these if worthwhile.
