What is the correct glow plug? OS 20FP 25LA
« on: May 01, 2015, 05:23:02 AM »
I am running engines converted from RC.  I have

OS25LA with the e-2030 muffler, APC 9x4 prop

and

OS20FP with the e-2030 muffler APC 9x4 prop.  These are the older iron sleeved engines if it matters.

I am running Omega 10% or 15% with added castor to a total oil load of around 22%.

Since these are used engines, and RC conversions I am unsure what the glow plug is supposed to be (I am unsure what plug is in them right this instant, but they are in the garage).  I have OS #8 plugs on hand.  I have run these engines with what they have in them as minimal cleaning was needed on any of them and they ran fine on the ground on the fuel I have.

Thank you

Phil

Phil,
The #8 is the standard plug and is just a little cooler than wanted/needed and slightly longer than the recommended plug the A3 which is a medium length/hot plug. That plug will put the element at its sweet spot in the head and is also hot enough to assure you of a clean run.
Tongue mufflers will save you a few ounces up front and are available from several vendors. your oil content is fine but 15% nitro is generally unnecessary with 5 or10 percent depending on temperature being the norm.
Others may have additional hints for best running.

It is absolutely critical to run the *stock muffler* - it is absolutely key to the way it runs well for stunt. And it should be completely unmodified, nothing changed in any way. IT runs enough better that way to make up for any minor weight increase, at least on airplanes that are of appropriate size (35-sized).

I haven't found the glow plug to be critical. The 25LA-S comes with an OS #6 and that seems entirely satisfactory, but I have run discarded Thunderbolt 4-Cycle plugs from my real airplane with the element scraped clean and old Glo-Devil #300s.

The stock engine (highly recommended) wants at 10% nitro for good needling. It will run OK on 5% but is touchy on the needle. 15 or 20% (like YS 20/20) smooths it out more, and above that, you don't really gain anything, up to 35%, which is the most I have tried.

These are all "previously loved" RC conversions.  So... yea... Box stock... I'm trying.  I used a parts list in one of your threads to put these together, so the venturi is the part number recommended, and the same for both the FP20 and the LA25.  These are early FP20's came with a muffler other than the E-2030 (846 I think?) I have the newer muffler now.

I should have done this earlier

http://www.osengines.com/parts/xr12360.html

So it looks like the LA25 wants the " O.S. #6 A3 Glow Plug Hot Air" while the FP20 wants the #8's I have on hand.  I guess I need to order some.  However you say this is less than critical, as long as the plug is good and fits the engine.

Sounds like my fuel is OK, I will look for something I don't need to doctor up when I run out.

I don't get the OS plugs, aside from those who came with the engine, because they are too expensive. It's not critical at all, as long as you run them at full crank as intended.
