Interesting note on getting parts.

Saturday I crashed a plane with a RO-Jett 65 in it. Hit right on the spinner (a glancing blow). It seemed the stud screwed into the crank shaft was out of round slightly (no other damage). Bearing seemed find and it spun freely. I went to a local screw and bolt supplier to see if I could get another screw in stud (it's actually considered a really long set screw). Pretty standard 1/4-28 thread. But it is 2" long. They didn't carry it (thanks Tacoma Screw) and couldn't order it. Guy told me there was no such thing. I showed him the original and he said it must be custom made unit.

So, I went to McMaster Carr's online site and what do you know? They not only carried it, but I had my choice of type of metal, end type and pitch. I ordered a box (only way you could get them) of 10. A big $5.71. So next time a local supplier tells you something like this, and such things have happened to me a number of times with local suppliers, just go to an actual supplier that carries more than the most very common stuff. And don't listen to them when they tell you there ain't no such animal.

Some time ago, I bought a 1/4 x 28 threaded rod at a local hardware store.

Yup.  I'm not sure if "they don't make that" means "none of my suppliers carries that", "my imagination is too small to encompass a world where you can buy that", or "I'm sorry, sir, but we don't want you for a customer".

But -- don't give up.  Somewhere out there is a "them" that makes just about anything.

Knowing them, they probably carry it. But I was thinking about hardware. But hey, whatever...

As long as I was there, I also ordered a couple of end mills and some other stuff.

Not really your choice of pitch, because you needed 1/4-28 and 28 is the pitch.  A  1/4 screw would be available in 1/4-20, 28 and 32, the last being a glow plug thread as I recall.

 McMaster Carr has just about everything.  Ask any professional tool builder/mechanical designer.  Lots of stuff there for creative people who like to play.  Check out the ball bearings that are available at a reasonable price.  Carr Lane is also a good source for stuff like nylon coated stainless steel cable.  Some gouys were using this for leadout wire since you dont have to bushings in the bellcrank.

When I said pitch, I was thinking about the choice of standard, English standard and metric. There was also an assortment of "non-standard" threads. If they don't have it, you don't need it.   ;D

More correctly, some guys were using this for leadout wire since they didn't think they would need to bush the bellcrank. Unfortunately, this proved to be erroneous. y1 Steve

I have come to using only lead out wire that has a piece of 1/16th brass tubing bent around the BC with the wire inside.  Like Tom Morris does with is assembled BC units (and other do it, too).  Works with all BCs.
