Title: What does Randy Smith do to a OS LA .46??
Post by: Paul Taylor on February 17, 2012, 08:16:32 PM
Anyone running the OS LA .46 from Randy.

I see that the OS LA .46 is listed as Bal. & Blueprinted.

What does that include?

I don't think anyone wants to give away Randy's "mojo" secrets or maybe they they don't know what his blueprinting involves. If I had one I'd tell you via email, but I don't own one, but do have an RSM LA 46 that was slightly reworked by Larry Foster. If you are interested I can tell you about it privately, but out of respect for his livelyhood at providing us with his excellent products I would not feel comfortable publicizing it.

Thanks Joe,

I did not think there were any secrets when it comes to sharing stuff in our hobby.

I would not want to know how to do it, just what is it? The last thing I want to do is take a file to the inside of my engine. I will leave it to the experts.

Just more or less want to know what is done to see if it is work the $$$ to me.

I have one of Randys Super Tigre 51s that is bal&blueprinted and it is the best running engine I have. Do what is on the instruction sheet and it will run great. Definatly worth the extra money.

Its probably filled with all that tribal knowledge that comes with years of experience. Its not so much what's in there, it's what you don't have to fuss with out at the field. Think of the time you'll save trying to get the setup right.

I move Paul buy one of Randy's LA 46 and tell us what's in it!
Anyone second the motion?

I don't know the specifics, but the balancing deal is self explanatory.  As to Blue Printing, I suspect Randy has a sheet he develops for each engine as to the timing, etc., that will give the best run.  With manufacturing differences (tolerances), no two engines will be exactly the same out of the box.  Also there will probably be a heat dam cut around the glo plug hole.

Hey Mike.... send me the $$$ and I will be happy to buy one of his engines. I think anything that has Randy's finger prints on it is worth the $$$. H^^

As for my skill set today -the LA .46 is the best bang for the buck. I will agree that at times a different NVA or Backplate might be needed. The stock engine is very user friendly and you can get parts and fuel for it at almost any LHS.

It was not real clear what Randy does to the engines, but the info above kind of helps. I might sometime in the future send him one of my blue engines to rework.

Thanks Guys! ;D

I spent about eight years in Randy's shop. This is what I have to say...

You need one of whatever!   8)

(And do what he tells you)!

Hi Paul,

If all Randy did was simply balance the engine correctly, that would be a big boost!
