Irvine 36C/L
« on: March 05, 2007, 08:18:37 AM »
Can this motor be made to work?
I bought 2 of them a few years ago when I returned to C/L and built a plane to try one of them out.
It was an easy starter, had loads of power but it only runs one way and that is in a fast 2 cycle. I never heard anything good or bad on this motor, it was relatively expensive for it's size. I do know that Peabody had one, hated it and got rid of it. I'm not in the mood to get rid of 2 well made motors so to the question at hand.
Did anyone do the work to get these to be consistant stunt runners and what did you do to get there.

Dennis, I don't have the CL model, but I have a 40MK III that I've used for RC.  It's so beautiful, and runs so good that I've put it away to save it, as it is, apparently, one of the last that are English built.  You might check out the "Just Engines" site.  They are the distributor for Irvines, and although they're in England, they're geared up to ship to the US.  They are also the folks to talk with, through email, about your questions.  I got some good advice on how to convert the MK III to CL, if I ever want to.   Glen

Dennis,
Send it to Bryon Barker he specializes in reworking this engine. You can get a new reworked Irvine 36 from him for $140.00.....812-948-9167.....or he will rework yours.

Having been a fan of Irvine motors for a lot of years I have a fairly good stash of them including the Mills replicas. As to the Red case models  besides the 2 C/L 36's I also have 2/40's 1 46/ 2/53 1/150 1/61 2/25's. I also have a lot of the previous series including 4/40 diesels 2/20 diesels 1/20 glow 1/120 1/150 1/72 3/40  1/46
As to the Mk 1's more of the same but 2/30's also. Most of them are NIB as I''m not particularly hard on the motors that I run. Controlline is harder on motors then R/C
What can I say but for years I was a voracious accumulator. Thankfully I have slowed down as I can't find too much more room for 'stuff'
Oh and like all hoarders I hate to part with anything.

Just like most things, stunt has "fashions". The Irvine 36 was quite an "in fashion" motor in England for a little while. Although side exhaust they were usually run on a pipe, and were quite good, I imagine of the same ilk as the OS 40VF. I think they faded from stunt due to the increasing number of dedicated stunt motors becoming available, the 36 was primarily an r/c motor.

I have several of the Irvine 36 C/L motors. They do make a very nice Profile Carrier motor and worth trying in a sport class 1. Excellent power and great low speed.
Thanks

I didn't so much HATE it, but got tired of fiddling..
I didn't like the fact that they were considerably wider at the mounts than other similar engines......making swaps a bit tough...
Have fun.
