Vibration from my baby FSR 40
« on: May 21, 2012, 08:53:57 PM »
Hi Randy,
My little OS 40 FSR seems to have a little more vibration than I want?? I guess my question is, if the bearing are going bad could this cause this problem?? I removed the engine from the plane and placed her on my test stand. Checked balance on two different props. The reason I removed her from the plane, wanted to be sure that the front of the plane wasn't causing the problem. I run her with out the pipe system, set the rpm's at 10400 on level and she was turning 11900 nose up. I believe this is why we use pipe to control the rpm's and power. Anyway would appreciate your input. Tomorrow I'm going to set up a new OS40FSR and see if she does the same. The reason I'm running the FSR is cause I'm using her on a profile plane.

Thank You
Gary

Yes if you have bearings going out you can get more vibration, you also will get more vibration running it on a profile

Hi Randy,
Thanks for your input. Yes a profile will give you a lot more vibration. The profile I use it on has a strong front end so I've been lucky so far. I've never messed with an OS FSR, will I need a puller to remove the spacer or will it work bye just heating the front end up?? We have several bearing outlets here in Fresno and if I remove the bearing they may have a match?? I appreciate your input.
Thank You

Hi Guys,
Today I set up the new OS 40 FSR. Used the same set up as the old one. The venturie is from a OS 46 SF, needle valve Super tigre. Prop ABC 11/4, fuel 5% with 22% oil, half castor half syn. The baby settled in at 8900 rpm's, which is low compared to my other FSR's. Sounded almost like it was running a 4-2-4 mode. With the test stand I have can't use a muffler or pipe so she's really nice and loud. Yes when I turned the nose up she went right to 12000 but came back to the 8900 so I was happy about that. At 8900 not much vibration at 12000 she had more vibration than my older FSR?? Checked the prop again and its very very close?? Most my FSR I launch at 10200 and they unload in the air. I use the FSR's on pipe. The FSR is a very dangerous engine cause of the amount of power she puts out. I use to start them by hand but I don't do that anymore, I use a starter. Most won't use a starter cause they're afraid that they will push the crank againt the back plate. I don't believe that is true, cause if the thrust washer is correct and the prop is tight, I don't believe you will push the crank against the back plate, just my opinion. Maybe the vibration is harmonic??? I appreciate your input.
