I Have a Veco .19 GP and would like to know if it would be usable as a controlline engine. Is the timing the same as the C/L version ? the head is made with the fins sideways but I can get a head from MECOA or I can make a new one,same with venturi. All help appreciated.

The cylinder and shaft timing are the same. The compression may be a bit lower on the R/C version.
I don't understand why the head fins would be sideways. I would remove the head and look the situation over. It simply doesn't make any sense for it to be sideways unless it was set up for a car! If it is a car engine then all bets are off as the timing could be significantly different!
The Veco 19 is legendary for being a great engine for C/L. Very powerful. In the class with most modern 25's and stronger than some!

Yea , they did a CAR one . Thats the head . dunno that itd matter , on low nitro fuel , for now anyway .
The Case is Shorter over the spray bar hole , on the R.C. version , so a Std C/L intake needs a 1/8 odd ' tube ' spacer there .
Were Two Airplane Heads , & Two Intakes specs , std .
Hot ones for Combat .
Had Two in the Mosquito . 88 mph in SPEED ! 8 x 6s , 9 x 4 top flights better stunt props .
Ive used the FOX 19/25/35 tube mufflers , with a strap . Hoot of a plane .
R5 Rossi Plugs ( Anyone Got any . PLEASE > ) needs warm up & sounds meanaceing , unmuffled .
Normally 5 or 10 nitro . New use 30 % oil , first 1/2 gallon . Vecos are pretty tight New .

I have a head from a plain bearing Veco .19 R/C engine if that would help. Looks nothing like this one on the outside. Cost of postage.

Hi Juan,
I have used a Veco .19BB in stunt quite a bit. Remember, it is not a 4-2 engine, just run it in a wet 2 like the modern .20 and .25's. A 9-4 prop is the best starting place. These were used a lot in the old WRAM "A" class stunt classes in light .35 size classic planes. A light Dolphin and a Veco .19BB is a great choice!

I wouldn't worry about the direction of the cooling fins as long as the baffle slot is lined up. Conversation starter really, it gets more cooling in loops where it's needed lol. If it has a good piston fit I'd use it. I've got a Veco 19 on a Ringmaster and love it.

Thanks to all for the information and special thanks to you Garf for the generous offer of the Head of the plain bearing engine but it has short cooling fins and I already have one. I will be taking the engine head off to see if I can modify it and will be checking the timing to compare it to wornout Veco.19 plain bearing that I have I`m curious to find out if it has the same timing. I have always heard good things about the engine. I`m thinking about building a small plane to fly in a backyard.

I was able to acquire a used Veco.19 C/L 1971 version and I decided to compare the timing on both engines. I took the backplate of the Veco .19 GP and proceeded to check the timing as accurately as I could and came up with this numbers Ex open 110 degrees atdc and closed at 247 degrees for a duration of 137 degrees, Intake opened at 220 degrees and closed at 35 degrees atdc for a duration of 175 degrees. Transfer port opened at 120 degrees atdc and closed at 240 degrees for a duration of 120 degrees. In the Veco .19 C/L version I got Ex open at 110 degrees atdc closing at 250 degrees for a duration of 140 degrees,intake opened at 217 closing at 40 atdc for a duration of 183 degrees. I didn`t take a transfer por reading because I did not want to take the head of the engine. My conclusion is that the Veco .19 GP can be used for control line. The .19 GP has a stronger rod since it was designed for cars and sustained High RPM also the drive washer is keyed to the crank. The .19 C/l has a bushed cast rod. All you have to do is get a head and NV from Mecoa and have somebody make a venturi for it. I`m going to be using the C/L version and save the .19GP for another ocasion. Here are some pics.

I decided to clean the Veco.19 C/L engine and as the photo shows the C/L engine head has a hemisferical combustion chamber and lower compression compared with the Veco .19 GP car engine. Here is a picture.

Juan, on mine I was able to remove the needle valve from the VECO carb and use it as the CL assembly. I used a nylon electrical spacer from Home Depot for the venturi.

That`s a great solution I will check in home depot next time I go. I have a small lathe and can turn it to fit where the carb was and drill a hole for the NVA. I ran the the c/l version with an APC 9 x 4 on Powermaster 5/29 and it sounded pretty good Thanks.
