Choices and Choices for a SIG Magnum

Well,during the last Randy's corner web video chat I broke out the Custom Hobbies Forerunner kit only to find whom ever had the kit before me made all the foam wing sheeting disappear as well as screwing up the leading edge profiles the glued in the foam cores. Well that pretty much killed my enthusiasm to start building that kit. Pissed me off royal.... Especially as I got it form someone on this site and they never mentioned that they had started to build the kit. But is was quite a few years ago and I cannot remember who sold me the kit.

I also picked up a SIG Magnum kit from anemone here and I must say that kit is PERFECT!!! Soooo Koool! Well I have a couple engines that I can put in that puppy. I just picked up a brand new in the box Italian Super Tigre  G51 RC, I also have a OS 45 FSR. My OS 45 VF looks like it would be too tight with the pipe header to fit into the stock fuselage, so with the other tow options I will leave the VF for another Airplane. SO my dilemma is which engine do I put in the magnum? The G51 or the FSR 45? And no I do not want to force either engine to run a 4-2-4 break. That is like asking the Eminem to sing Do Wop.

I think you will find with the stock formers the OS45FSR is the slightly easier fit then the 51 just don't build tail heavy. To fit a 60 or other large case engine means wider formers and block together with running out of tank space for a bigger engine.

Peter  the  2 motors  are  mostly the  same  size in fuse width , and the  ST is slightly  lighter, Both of those  engine  will  run a good  4/2, but at higher  RPMs.  I do not know which engine models you have, as both were made in CL versions, If assuming  they both are, I would opt  for the  st 51.  I ran a Sig Magnum with a  COMO 51 for a couple of  years, It was about a perfect engine for it, and  as you may know  the  COMO  was a  ST  built engine. I used a  12 x 5 with the  51,  and  I would  use a  12 x 4 wide, or a 12.5 x 4.5  with the  OS FSR 45. YOu can also use  the  12 x 4.5  3 blade with that engine. The  BOLLY  12 1/4 x 4  1/4  would be a  very good prop for the  FSR too
First thing you have to do is  see  which version engines  you have

   I will post another vote for the ST.51. It is an good fit into the fuselage, tank capacity is easier to fit in also. I had a (now retired ) kit built Magnum wit way too much clear and heavy vinyl stickers on it that came it at 72 ounces, and the ST.51 was up to the challenge. What the wood weight and don't put too much finish on it and they come out closer to 60 ounces most times. The APC 12.25-3.75 is the excellent choice for that combination also. I still have a few Magnums put away and hope to revisit that model but do it lighter this time around. Make it with the wing mounted gear but glass the block in a bit, and make provisions for fuselage mounted gear also for grass flying. I have always though it would be a good model to kit bash into a Focke-Wulf 190, just sorta look like it sitting there!

Both of these engines are RC versions. I will send off the G51 to you for the ABC treatment, venturi, and NVA. Ohh before I forget someone mentioned that you may have side to rear headers that would fit the OS 40 FSR. Of course they are RC versions as well.

I built a magnum and started out with a fox 40, then a ST51 and finely a Rojet 65
