Tips on RR circlips.
« on: April 12, 2022, 01:03:20 PM »
Kindly suggest tips that will enable me to remove and replace circlips in an engine that has been out of production for man decades.

Grab the tang cross bar, twist it so the clip gets smaller then pull it out. To install place the free end of the clip in the hole, work it around and into the hole with your 2 thumb nails then push the clip into the groove with a squared off piece of music wire then rotate the clip until the tang is pointing down then inspect with 5x.

BTW it's not hard to make clips if you have the right wire.

Do the above in a large clear plastic bag. Then if part gets loose you have not lost it.

And be sure you are using pliers with a crisp, square, clean tip, or you are just causing yourself grief. You need the right tool for this job, not one you hope is "good enough," else you will be (a) looking for the clip you just launched somewhere [the plastic bag idea works here], and (b) you will gouge up the clip which may make it more prone to breaking once the engine is running and the clip is screaming back and forth right next to your old, irreplaceable liner....

good TWEEZERS !

getem free first , the circlip . asinanythingelse . SOLVENT .

Can make them easy , .016 single strand & decent non wobbly needle nose pliers . Wrap & size . Side Cutters needed . NOT on Mondays or Fridays .

ALWAYS check the ' sprung ' size is well over the weeney hole size . And the cross wire can fail if  harrased . SO some pre remove it, fitted .
Got to have say 1 mm end clearance - The Loop .

A Scalple Tip to free / rotate , back edge against cross wire corner , should move it circularly - Then it can be prised free with the tip , and carefully removed .

SEE the in the plastic bag trick . Or a king sized sheet - white - spread out . Dont do em when your jittery .
