Thunder Tiger 36 .... WOW !
« on: October 13, 2008, 11:12:58 AM »
Greetings all . Just got back from the field after flying my 'Twister Plus' , i.e. Stock Twister scaled up by 10% , but fixed flaps ! It was the first outing with my TT36 installed which I had bought some time ago off the infamous E-Bay. I had bought an un-run R/C engine without a flaw thank goodness !

I had read so many excellent reports about this engine I had to have a go and try one.

After receiving the engine it was run-in carefully , 22 [ yes , twenty two ] two minute fast and rich runs with a 10x4 Graupner prop. Afraid I'm a luddite when it comes to running-in engines.
It's a bit like the old song from 'The King and I' ....Getting to know you !

The stock Tiger was running with one head shim , a Byron Barker venturi [ the one he recommends for this engine ! ] ,and an RSM Super Tiger NVA also from Byron.

By the way , what a real 'Gentleman ' Byron is .....Helpful, great with advice and reliable. Many thanks Byron.

After the running in was completed I tested some props on the bench ...... An 11x5 APC appeared about right for first flights so off we went.

Fuel was my own concoction .... 5% nitro , 25% oil [ 18% synthetic / 7% added castor ].
Launch RPM was around 8400 according to my [ unreliable ] tach.

Oh.... I should mention the tank. A Brodak 4 oz. ' Large Profile ' on Uniflow. I'd read an article about this being an ideal tank for side-winder installations as the fuel 'pick-up' line is close to the NVA level .
I agree , they work just great !

So , how did we get on ...Great ! What a super engine . Held it's setting better than anything I've got currently.

Bags of grunt , easy to set up.

So ....The real reason I wanted to post this thread is to say many thanks to all those contributors to this forum for all the information recommending the TT36 .

I'm very much obliged .

Robin,
try APC 10.5x4.5" - the RPM will go up, and the engine may be even happier, as those are RC-timed engines (read: high RPM).

Mike , much obliged. Next time out we'll have a go . I agree , the 10.5 x 4.5 APC is a super prop. I use them on my Enya 30 [ thanks to a contributor to this forum ] and on my Magnum 36.

Thanks again ,

Robin. [ Ex pat Brit in the Charente full of ex-pat Brits ]
