Thread Size / Diameter Of OK Cub Needle Valve
« on: November 24, 2016, 05:50:57 PM »
Hi all. So I am just curious if anyone would happen to know the thread pitch for an OK Cub 049 engine. It has only the triangular radial mount and no beam mounting capabilities, in case this makes a difference to identify it. I am getting one and it is missing the needle and after hearing about the needles, I was thinking I could make one. Thank you.

Ok. So after a bit of digging around online, I think that I just found out that the OK Cub needle I need has the threads on the outside of the spraybar, allowing me to make a needle non-existent, but wont know for sure till I get the engine in my hands. My bad. Can anyone with an OK Cub .049B confirm this for me? So now I have to look at other options.

I can confirm that for the .074 the needle threads on the outside of the spraybar.

Looks just like this one, which might just be your other option  :)

Several of them on ebay.

You could still make one, it is two piece. The aluminum part threads over the spray bar and has a slot in it so it can be squeezed a bit so it does not move.
The steel needle is pressed into the centre.

You could plug the needle valve end of the spraybar and use a remote needle in the fuel line between the tank and the engine.  The OK spraybar could be pressed out with risk of damage to the case, but if you can get it out you could use something else.  Best option - put an add in the classifieds.  There are lots of those engines around and there should be some parts out there.

Why not go straight to the source?  http://okengines.com/main.shtml    (And YES, they are still in business.)

Weird web site. They charge $2 for a printed catalog, or if you email they will send you a digital copy.
Why not just post it on the web site for download, like they do with the train one? ???

Must not be many tech geeks working there :)

Thanks. I just went to their website. I was very surprised as I had heard they were closing their doors in December 2015. Anyway, I requested a catalogue then saw shipping to the US was $9, and elsewhere was a flat rate $20! Anyways, I posted a question and will wait to hear back from them.

Hmmmm. I had not thought it would be possible to put or use a remote needle on something like this. Now this sounds interesting. Off to do some research now. Probably a whole bunch safer as well, considering the small needle right behind the front. Thanks for the idea.

I really don't know how a remote needle would work on a small engine but it you try it Horizon Hobby has a nice one cheap.  I have a couple of the 36 ones and they are nicely made and all metal. If you have a hobby shop near you they should be able to order it for you if you wish.

I did get conformation from OK Engines today, and yep, they want $20 USD shipping to me up here for the needle. Anyways, I do have one on hold for me, so am hoping to get it in about a week or two, as the weather here is holding out very well, and may still allow a run this year!  #^

If you have any old OS carburetors laying around, you can unscrew the needle valve assembly from the carb and use it as a remote needle. I have done this many times when my son was young and learning to start his own engines and set his own needles. It's pretty small and light, has 4mm threads if you need to drill and tap anything to mount it on, and the needle seal a LOT better than any of the O-ring type needles out there. When I go to swap meets and look for old R/C engines to convert for stunt, I look for the older OS engines and/or loose carbs that might be broken but have good needles on them. Tower used to still have the needle assemblies in stock but I haven't looked in a while.
  Type at you later,
