Randy smith os 40 reworked engine
« on: April 13, 2007, 01:03:16 AM »
I bought a engine that was said to be reworked by randy smith. The only thing that you could see was some scratched randy on the bottom of the case. I am guessing that the owner did this . It was the older fp . Well I opened it up and found that the ports at the bottom were bigger than stock. What dose that do for you ? Also how can you tell if you get an engine from Randy Smith by just looking at it ?
Oh ....I see ,you mean the ones on a string ?

Greetings,
first off, I am NOT an engine expert, heck I dont know if I would classify myself as even knowlegable, but I will throw my two cents worth. I fly predominantly FP40x, in fact I have 8 of them lol, (its an obsession thing I guesslol)I was shown one way to tune them by one fo the local engine gurus. Basically it is to rework the timing on the boost (? I believe its the boost port, the center one) so, cant say anything about whetner Randy Smith worked the motor, but perhaps that will give you a better feelign that it is a legit tune. I love my FPs.
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

Randy marks (scratches with a vibrator type machine) all of his reworks and PA's with "Randy XXX", where xxx is a unique number that identifies who the engine was built for. If you call him, he can look up in his book tell you who that was and perhaps you can trace the engine back to that person. You can also look at the cylinder head and see if there is a  groove cut into the head going around it as though there were Xtra cooling fins on it. There is also a heat dam (a little groove) cut around the glow plug to keep it lit! See the pictures below...

As to what these mods do for you, it turns a screaming R/C engine into a well behaved Controline stunt engine! Run it with 5% nitro, and 22% oil. 50% Synthetic and 50% Castor

BTW, I worked in Randy's shop for quite a few years  H^^

Hi Greg

I engrave my name and a number on the engines I rework.
If it has Randy  scratched on the case with no number  it is NOT one of mine

It it has the bottom of the ports opened. It is NOT one of mine.

best way to find out about engines I reworked is to call me.  I will be  glad to help you with  the infomation

Regards
Randy

Shoot you got to laugh but man I have wasted enouff to get the real deal from you. Well live and learn. I am getting a tax return and may just have to spring for a pa engine. What would you put on a corbra ? The 36 or the 40 ?

Hi Greg,

Not Randy, but you will not go wrong with either one in the Cobra! The Aero Tiger 36 or the PA 40UL.  (The regular PA 40 is strong but heavier, and the UL is PLENTY strong!.)
