Super Tigre 46 G 21
« on: April 04, 2008, 11:35:16 AM »
Hi Randy,

I have a ST 46 G 21 engine, was there several versions of this motor? I have one that has ears for a muffler and one that doesn't have ears. They're both great engines but I've heard there is three different types of this engine. Gossip is great but I would like to know for sure. Is there a way to tell which model you have? I'm sure this question has been asked many times, just don't know how to find the questions to get the answers. I typed ST 46 G 21 in search and didn't get the answer I way looking for.  The Tigre is yesterdays news but I still love the way they run. Mr. Frank replaced the ring or rings and bearings in her and she just loves to run. I tried a tongue and tube muffler on her and I believe she likes the tube muffler better. A plane around the Vulcan or Ares size and man what a ride. Thank you and appreciate your response, Gary

HI Gary

I have 5 differant versions here, plus there has been many differant pistons, sleeves of differant thickness  and  coatings, differant cranks, rods, cases, and the early version had a restrictor instead of a sprinkler intake.
As far as it going into an Ares or Vulcan, I would advise against that now that there are far better, smoother, lighter, more powerful motors for those ships.

Regards
Randy

Hi guys,

Thank you for your response, is there any numbers or signs that tell which model I have? Five different model of the 46, is there one that is better than the other, are they all about the same? How much power does the tigre make? I'm sure a lot depends on how its set up. I wouldn't trade me tigre for any motor I've seen, in its size range. I haven't seen one of the 36 motors Ty mentioned. The OS 46 is a great motor but doesn't sound like my tigre. I've seen the brodak 40 and wouldn't trade it for my tigre, Brodak 40 is a good engine, nice sound, just like my tigre better. I guess I'm just a old timer. I'm able to do the pattern on a 4 ounce tank with the tigre. Don't remember what it weighs, seems like I almost always have to add weight to the tail. I believe most all the new motors develop more power and weigh less. I appreciate the input, Gary

What Randy said is true and there are endless variants of the ST40-46. The last one had the narrow dust cover and muffler ears. Then there is the wide dust cover with out ears but otherwise the same. Those are the two motors to use and convert to ABC. Now we get into the many variants some were built with two rings and no bearings in the con rod. Very early versions have a thinner sleeve and almost nothing from that motor will fit later motors. The case and the sleeve have to match.Wrist pin is not located in the same location and the rod is not the same length as later motors. Then there are the truly oddball version that are cross over models. I have one of these odd models that is one of my most powerful motors and I used it in my USA/1. It is a thin sleeve with single ring and later version piston and rod. What I am calling the dust cover is the prop thrust washer. In the 80's when I was rebuilding these motors I was buying parts from ST in Italy and they called the thrust washer the dust cover in there parts list.I had several rear rotor 40's that had the same timing as the front intake 40 and ran well in a profile with a small venturi. One of those had a Dyke's ring! The one problem I have seen for a long time with the older versions is if something wears out they are expensive to repair except for rings with Frank still has. There have been just as many versions of the ST/56-60.

Hi Matthew,

An OS 46LA, in my experiences, doesn't appear to make quite the same power (usable power??) as a  ST 46 does.

  Hi Bill,

I agree, I have both engines. The OS 46 is a great engine, just not the same as the tigre 46. The different I notice is when I'm stunting the tigre seems to start pulling harder but will settle back to a nice four cycle run when level. Just me I'm sure, have a great day,Gary

Spent a lot of time with both motors. No comparison. The ST46 was a world class powerplant for many years. The LA 46 is a great profile\sport stunt motor. Walter Hicks described the run characterisitcs of a ST 46 as "sweet". I can't think of a better description. The LA in comparison is a non-ringed\plain bearing sport motor. The only other engine in my possession that is in the class of my ST 46 for run characteristics is my Saito 40A;another ringed ball bearing motor.

Hi guys,

I flew my tigre 46 again today, just no engine like her. Love her, love her. I flew her three different times today and each time she just tore holes in the sky. Nothing like her, I just can't believe there is anything close to a tigre 46. When she took off everyone stopped just to watch and hear that beautiful sound, just having fun, Gary

Gary,
The grace of a ST .46 is simply a joy as the ST V.60. The .35 Stunt engine is also great. I guess I'm just old school but love to run these. I have a Bowman hybrid Mccoy.35 and a T&L .40 McCoy hybrid for classic ship. Also other fine engines  are Enya #6001.45BB  and OS .40H. I know some like screaming engines I like the older classic engines. Classic Stunt has cut off date of 1969 and engine should also be from that time. Millions of engines were sold and many are still around. Even OTS allow adjustable leadouts/ weight box/ modified  building to get a Ringmaster a feather lite. Even allow electric that was unheard of back then.
