Stuck ring ?????????????????????????
« on: July 11, 2017, 11:38:04 AM »
      Hello All:

I have an engine that I suspect has a stuck ring.  My questions are:

How does one determine if the ring is stuck?

How does one free a stuck ring?

The engine has a conventional  ring on an aluminum piston.  I have attempted to press the ring into the groove but to no avail.  The ends of the ring at the gap are very well polished.  This may be an indication that the ring is indeed stuck.  I have been soaking the piston/ring in acetone for several weeks.  This has not freed the ring.  I have heated the piston/ring to 300 degrees F but this did nothing.  Perhaps I will boil the p&c in some water that has a bit of dishwashing liquid added.  Perhaps a trip in the ultrasonic cleaner may help. Last but not least, the crock pot treatment.  For some reason, the crock pot method has done nothing for me for cleaning engines for a long time.  Am I using incorrect anti freeze or will any type of antifreeze suffice?

        What to do next?

                                                                                                                    Tia,

                                                                                                                    Frank McCune

Hello Frank
Had that problem many times with old stuck ebay engines I have bought, usually stuck with dried caster oil and rust/alloy corrosion. The trick first would be see if you can buy a new ring first as chances of breaking them are high.
Worst case I ever had was an OS 20 four stroke as the piston and ring and tolerances are so small . Got it free after soaking and heating only helped but did not free it, used compressed air forced into the ring gap and gradually opening up the ring gap and forcing ATF into the gap. Had to carefully support the ring as they are so easy to break if you over-stress them before you have freed it with solvent /compressed air. Regards Gerald
