Title: Stalker 55 (Modusa type) 2-2 mode.
Post by: Manuel Cortes on November 01, 2020, 09:15:47 AM
Hi all.
I´ve a Stalker-Modusa 55 SE, the 1995 production, still new, and I am planning to use in a model recently. I´ve no experience in these engine.

Do some of you know a good start point to run it?

Mi initial setup could be 13x6 prop, (expecting approx 7200 7500 rpm (take off setting), 22% oil 50-50, and 5% nitro. Enya 3 glow plug.

I heard these had fuel leak from the front bearing, will change it for a sealed one, an the rear one for a better one too. It seems they are happy with 4 oz or less for a flight....

Thanks in advance.
Manuel.

I've been running Stalkers for years with great results, and find them to be very good stunt engines. they are well designed and made using very good metallurgy.

I suggest you not run Castor at all but, rather run straight FAI fuel with a good modern Synthetic oil. In all my Stalkers, over 20 years of use, I've never felt the need to run anything else but FAI fuel.

Nitro is not needed in almost all cases.

Castor, If you absolutely believe you need it, should not be more than 3-5%. Too much castor can carbon up your engine requiring de-coking, to remove it periodically.

Start with an 11 through 13-inch prop at 5"- 6" pitch, 6700 - 8+ K RPM for a start, is usually a good bet. Mine wind up somewhere in that range.

I shy away from running long props on my .51's and, I get great service out of an 11" X6" prop with that engine. As you likely know, they haven't made the .55 for a long time but, with my.61, from the same time frame as yours, I use a 12" dia. prop. I do use a 13" prop on my .81's. My engines seem happy with these prop sizes, so I run them that way. There are also fewer problems with prop Gyro effects with the smaller propellor diameters in my opinion.

Hope this info helps, best of luck with your Stalker .55

Coincidentally, just a few moments ago I did a reply in the Turbine Oil thread where I mentioned my use of turbine oils in my Stalker 61 :).

I agree with the above comments.

Give it a very thorough wash out inside! And yes I'd suggest you replace the bearings.

Castor will varnish the bore. Just use a good quality synthetic at 20 to 22%.

Nitro - they are set up for 0%. But they do love the stuff if you shim the head to accommodate for it. I ran the 61's as high as 20%.

A prop like the TT 12.5x5.5 might work well on it.

The plug depth in the head suits long reach plugs. So the Enya 3 isn't the ideal plug. I'd suggest the Thunderbolt Idle bar or 4 cycle. I can send you some Manuel if you want to try them.

I've been running a pair of Stalker 51 (F.I.R.E.)  on easily-obtainable SIG 10-10-10.  FAI fuel is hard to find here.

No mods, and no head shims.
