Title: ST60 muffler?
Post by: Chris Fretz on January 05, 2018, 04:29:53 PM
What are my options for a ST60 muffler?  Other than a tongue muffler. The 60 has the mounting ears.

MERCO ( earlier ones had a wierd strap )

one can file them , and chew the baffles out maybe . Like a OS Silentflow .

The gungeie std ST 46 / Como one bolts on . You can grind off the outside to save an ounce . Some cut the tail pipe off .
Theres a big fat sausage aft that bolts on too . Blocking its outlet and drilling ten 2 mm holes in three rows ( 4-3-4 0)

at about 5 mm spacing , in the side aft , works pretty good .There .

Any of the swing/swivle ST late ones fit , but a bit gruesome astheticcallly, however you pronounce it .

One or two of the big ugly japanese ones , of a chunder tigre 46 etc will just wince on . a mm out but grit the eyballs & it goes on .

Easiest'd be a toungue from Brodack . and lightest. or Randy .

Depends on the power trip you want . Airframe weight & climate . big or small outlet .

Contact Randy Smith and see if he has any of his expansion mufflers in stock, or search out Scott Dinger for one of his. Both work very well, and are very light. The muffler mounts are the same for the ST.46, 51 and the 60, in case you run across something that is advertised for any of those displacements.
   Type at you later,

I did call Randy and he said he only had tongue mufflers for it.  But I'll check Scott.

Thanks
Chris

Kaz Minato sells excellent mufflers they are called Compact Side Muffler on his web site. Not cheap with shipping but worth every penny and excellent service only take about 4 days for them to get here!

BTW, Matt's Merco muffler may work well on an ST60 (or not), but it also tends to leak at the split and spew oil EVERYWHERE, far worse than open exhaust or a chip muffler. That's how Peter "Greasy Pete" Deane got his nickname. If you use it, do your flying buddies a favor, clean up the mating surfaces so they are actually flat instead of "British Leyland chassis lubrication" quality, and glue it together with silicone sealant.
