S/T rings
« on: December 07, 2015, 01:45:03 PM »

 Have been working with the s/t 60 rings .i have 3 engines with my rings in them. all with great compression . i have taken a T/L 60 apart and got most of Toms mods figured out.

the last set up  was a new 1974 model that was given to me in pieces i did the mods and put one of my rings in it and after puting it together it had zero comp, pulled it apart and looking at the sleeve i could see that after broaching the ports ,the sleeve hadn't been honed round ,.i honed the sleeve and re assembled the engine .it had great compression .ran it yesterday ,great starts and a steady 86000 ,my launching RPM on flying prop

i will hone a cylinder,clean piston and sleeve and fit a ring to the piston and sleeve for $20.

i will have fixtures for the 46 after the first of the year

this work has shown me that just putting a new ring in an engine dosent always work

   Hi Bob;
    Thanks for doing the research. Wish I had the technical background, time and tools to do it myself! Sounds kind of interesting. I have several ST.60s that will need rings and will try to re-inventory those as soon as possible. I had sent Tom 6 ST.60s to rework, and he got through 3 or 4 of them. I got the cores for the last ones back from the gentleman who's name escapes me right now, and they are of the older variety with out muffler ears, and take two rings I believe. Have to worked on any of those yet? Tom warned me a long time ago that all Tigre .60 parts will not interchange and was wondering if you had his descriptions of the different varieties? I think it was posted here on the forums at one time. I would like to at least get these put back into stock for with good fitting rings and they will still run acceptably for most people that way.
    Have you done any work with the newer ST.51 yet also? I would just like to have a few spare rings on hand for spares. I have a mixture of Italian and Chinese versions. I remember Frank Bowman telling me that the only difference he could find was a slight difference in the bore, with the Chinese versions being a hair bigger, and if you asked him for a pre-gapped ring, he would ask you which engine it was for and had a dummy cylinder in which to check the gap with for the specific cylinders. A rather neat idea.
   Once we get through the holidays I plan on sorting out and organizing my engine collection and will see exactly what I might be interested in. Probably want some of the .46 rings also.
   Thanks a lot,

  just got through reading a 1966 S/T 60 by Peter Chinn, in it he says that at that time every new batch that came in had something diff . it shows 2 heads and i know of 2 others, i had one engine set up by a top name and couldn't keep it in the plane found that the rod was much heavier and the crank had less balance .put another one in the plane and no more problems
