I see Tower carry's this engine now for 74.99 has anyone tryed it? Any reports? Thanks

The RC version is $5 cheaper. If you were industrious, you might be able to sell the carb on e-bay and finance the CL Venturi + a tube or tongue muffler.
I checked the parts list and the liners were the same part number, so I think the CL and RC are just the same timing (unlike the ST51 CL and RC which have different liners- but I don't really know the particulars about the differences there)

Bob Gieseke used one, for a while, in his small Noblers before he went to the "Bear". I do not know if it was stock, or worked on. IIRC, Randy Smith and Tom Dixon offered them on thier sites a few years ago. They didn't get a large following, but that might have been due to the OS 32F and Webra 32 that Hunt and Werwage using. Then along came the Aero Tiger 36! Strange how things lke that happens to engines.
I forget his name (it's late!), but a fellow in Las Vegas used one on his own design profile which was a good plane.

Don't know how the part no's. compare, but one guy in our club tried to use this engine and has given up. Turns out his was intended as a helicopter engine. No way could he get a good run, always inconsistent and running away. I assume it's very good in helicopters.

Ian, The 34 Heli is an abc motor and the standard is ringed and yes your right, they have different running characteristics.
The 34H is a nice motor for carrier class but I can't comment on the ringed version either as i have no experience with it.
I will say that the NVA from the ST51 in not a firect fit for this motor and of course the venturi is not adaptable either.
Part #'s are from Tower Hobbies
lxmrb4 ST venturi
lxmrb5 ST34 NVA

Well I couldn't resist and bought one. I received it today. I don't have proper measuring equipment for this but the venturi measures 9/32nd's so that's a 281? My tongue muffler for my L&J Fox 35 fits and low and behold it bolts right in where my Fox 35 goes on my Ringmaster. When I get off tomarrow I'll put it on the bench and see how it runs. The instructions call for a 9-6 break-in prop, how about running in the Ringmaster ? Weather permiting I'll fly it this weekend. n~ n~ n~ f~ j1 j1 j1

Hi Dennis. The 34H our club member had was ringed. ST have a habit of producing all sorts of combinations of their motors and it's extremely hard to keep up. Not only that, but you find one variation of engine tends to go to one country but not another. ST can be selling in another country an engine you never knew existed.

I put it on the bench and after flooding it I got it figured out. Choke it twice flip through a couple times, small venturi prime and about 3 flips it's running. I used a 9-6 MAS, Sig Champion 10/22 (50/50) ran very nice at 11,600 and broke about 12,400 give or take a little just a cheapo Tower tach. When I pinched the fuel line and released it immediatly went back to where it was and ran steady. It seems to have plenty of power so Sunday I'll put it in the Ring and see how it does.

Hi Lee, I would test fly with a 10-4 or 10-5 wood prop. A 6 pitch prop will be good for breaking the speed limit in "Speed Limit Combat". y1
I would also suggest an APC 10 1/2 - 4 1/2 as a try. The ST break in and prop suggestions are based on R/C with a carb.

HI Lee
A 10 x 4 or 10 x 5 prop is NOT a good prop for that engine, and WAY too small
You would want a min. 11 x 4 or 11 x 4.5. I would suggest not running anything over 10% nitro in it either
They are very strong engines and will run away if given a chance
Regards
Randy

HI Randy,
I would have thought to recommend a 11-4, but Lee said he had a 9-6 on it! I knew the 10" would be better than a 9". **)

Hi Bill
Both would be a little small, a 25 will turn the 9x6 and some will even turn a 10 x 6 most all of the BB 25 will turn a 10 x4 pretty well

Thanks Bill & Randy, I'll put an 11-4 on it and give it a go.
-
I just ran 2 more 3oz tanks on the bench with the 11-4. Nice and steady at about 9700 rpm, when the tank ran out it broke at close to 10500-10600. I'll put it on the Ring and rebalance it .
-
Well I flew it today and first off it is more engine than the Ringmaster needs. I think mine needs more break in as it was hard to set the needle. It does have good power but was hard starting sidewinder, but that could be me. For now the Fox 35 goes back on the Ring and put the ST on something bigger.
-
Keep us informed on this. From your comment re. the needle, it sounds as if you might be mirroring my clubmates experience, but things may get better with more running.

I used Randy's advice and went with the 11-4 prop. it had no trouble turning it. I was advised at the field to cut the nitro from 10% to 5% and see if that helps any.
