ST-60 breaking in
« on: September 25, 2017, 02:49:20 PM »
Any suggestions on how long to run a rebuilt ST-60 before putting it on my plane?   I don't know the history of the engine so don't know how much run time was on the original, but as far as I know this has not been run since being rebuilt.  Best fuel?

Till it dosnt get hot . S?P

If its tight ( Resistance to turning all the way / full turn on prop ) start with 30 % Castor .

Tho 25 % should be fine . READ THE ENGINE SET UP TIPS at the top of the board here ! .

I like to give the thing a few bursts on a prime , a few 2 second runs ,a few 5 /10 Second runs . then a few ( 3 or 4 ) 30 second runs .

The idea is on antiquated mechanical marvells ?  :-\ that we DONT GET HOT SPOTS . As In , NO Metal to Metal CONTACT . which they say will instanteaneousaly burr or scour the surface & or Ring .
Thus the early / first runs , such microscopic irregularities are kept from generating heat & swelling / cutting through the OIL FILM .

This is usually getting a bit carried away . But keeping it in a 4 stroke gets plenty of fuel , whgich has got plenty of oil in it . !

Ive flown a new ST 60 , slobbering rich , so you have to whip to climb then dive for airspeed , to get a loop , after two tanks rich on the ground .

Some fly after one tank , on a ' Flight Setting ' with no problems . In Winter in Ireland . SUMMER one should exercise caution . If the temperatures under say 12 C. Degrees , youll get more cooling air airborne .
Tho a lean setting might require drastic measures ..

Important not to OVERPROP it , usually a inch less diameter . say a 12 x 5 or maybe 6 , if the airs thin .

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once its got the ' bouncey ' free turning ' feel ' , which could be straight off - keeping it richish , shortish lines , cool air ( early mornings or late evenings ) and maybe 25 / 27 % Castor for a while
will let all the working surfaces ' work harden ' after mateing , giving longer servicebility & dependability .
After a Gallon Hard out and ignoring the weather . but preferably Two ( gallons ) First with no undue stress - temperature or abuse .
i.e. , after the first gallon you can work towards the ' flight ' prop & set up , just keeping it backed off a notch or two , and avoiding hot weather .

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some injuns will be set up dead right , all lapped in , from the get go . But still - letting the surfaces find there way , through the heat cycles , will usually be of benifit .

Usually said fuel consuption / stabel setting is a guide to its usefullness  as to being  ready for battle .

Rolls Royce Merlins were given a full power ' time to hight ' timed test on first flight , if the airframe was in trim . Some individuals prefer this ' runnim in as youd useim approach .

a degree of simpatico with either approach is a primary obligation . Essentially after a gallon it should hold right , no bothers . If flying a brick - keep er on the rich side and well oiled thru the second gallon two .
AND We've got BIGGER Gallons than YOU .  :## Being Imperialist Colonial degenerates . We have 20 Ounces in our PINT , ( four to a Gallon ) so your 50 gallon drum is a 44 Gallon Drum here .

AND We've got No 8 wire ! . S?P

such a nice picture of ANOTHER P-38 I had to put IT in Too . If you want politics , study this ( Leyland ) or the pommy TSR2 or C-105 Avro etc , and youll understand why polititions should be made illegal .  VD~ LL~

Hello Matt. Very good write up on running those ST 60's in. Ran my own in after buying from 436 models pretty much as you described then flew it for a short while then did the silly thing and sold it having barely used it!
Regards Gerald

p.s.The Leyland is it not a P76? and my favorite pommy plane that was killed off was the Saunders-Roe Princess a real shame such a wonderful flying boat ended like it did.
