Title: Shaft extentions
Post by: Jerry Bohn on March 03, 2007, 08:59:57 PM
My new Ares kit calls for a 1/2" prop shaft extention with a Brodak 40 shown on the plans.
I plan to use an Aero 40 RE Lite.
Will Fox extensions work?
I'm also not sure if Randy would condone the use of an extension on that motor.
I could mount the motor more forward but I'm afraid it will mess up the CG.

A phone call to Randy (678-407-9376) will do it. He is always helpful to answer questions on his engines and does not mind the call.

Hi Jerry

That is not necessary, the PA ultra lite is about 3/4 inch longer anyway, so it would be the same as a  FOX 35 with a 3/4 inch extention.
Prop shaft extentions are bad on most any motor, especially plain bearing ones, most ALL of them are  cast, therefore not perfectly true, and  magnify any vibrations from props  etc..  and  shorten the life of the  bearings.  But if you want to use one  anyway  you could do that much easier with a ball bearing motor.

Hi Jerry,

Randy has already answered the shaft extension question, and he's the man!

For the actual building of the plane, I would advise that you add an adjustable elevator horn and a weight box to the rear of the Ares.  ESPECIALLY the elevator horn!  This is per Mr. Werwage and experience with the Ares.  A very simple mod, horns are available from Tom Morris.  Any of us can help if you habve any problems with the installation.
