Ok, you guys.........................

Got a couple new in box Series 21 40's I want to use and need to know
what mufflers do you think would be ok on them.

Carl the short answer is McCoys aren't meant for mufflers.  The long answer is I have friend with this engine and an old Tatone muffler that is black as sin due to heat but still runs pretty well.  If you have to muffle it, it's more likely a matter of what might fit.  I'd try an Enya or some aftermarket with a wrap- around strap.... And a plenty of oil in the fuel.

I went to the muffler bucket and found the Enya and OS units aligned OK on the exhaust port.  You would have to roll your own bracket.  I've done pretty well using radiator hose clamps in the past.  I do suggest the expansion style muffler to reduce the back pressure issue and dissipate some heat.  I can send one if need be.

Got an old YS muffler on the 40 Series 21, has plenty of chamber volume, a little heavy though, ran fine on the bench, but is academic until I fly it.

Thanks, Carl. I used a narrow hose clamp, JB Welded the muffler holes shut, drilled and tapped for screws to mount the hose clamp strap to.

Hi Guys,

Don't forget that the Series 21 engines use a Dykes Ring and a better metal in the piston.  The best "mod" to a Red Head McCoy .40 is to drop a Series 21 Piston w/ring into the Red Head.  Pistons are available from MECOA along with the rings, but I would go with Bowman rings. :)
Just make sure the Red Head cylinder jug has the fences in the ports! (Most all of them do that I have seen)  I have a coupe .40 Red Heads done like this and they run as good (or even better) as the stock ones.  The timing didn't change.  DO NOT try to use the cyl. jug from the Series 21 .40 unless you can, and are willing to, machine the crankcase.  But the complete assembly WILL drop into the .29 and .35 (of which I also have a few!)  "Hybrid McCoys"

The old Tatone "Peace Pipe" will work, but you'll need to port match it and ream the stinger. I've seen some that had steel wool stuffed in them too. Not a bad muffler, just needs some work.

On the Tatone Peacepipes, I've found the chamber size understated. The .09-.19 is best suited to .10 and smaller. Am using one on my Enya .09-III TV. Am using the .29-.40 for my Enya .19-VI TV, works fine. I bought several .45-.65's, those I'm reserving for the .35's to .45's. I don't know if I would use it on a .60 though.

I suppose one could stuff them with steel wool similar to glass pack mufflers, but I haven't seen the need for that. In my use they seem to provide ample sound dampening without resorting to additional acoustic materials. I've seen some with exit tube cut off for a larger opening, got one I received just like that. Now that might be noisy and require taming.
