Are all Saito 40 A's created equal? I have a 40A in a black and gold box labeled High cam High power and another 40A in a white box with gold lettering . Do these have the same comp ratio, cam timing,etc. On the parts list neither list a cam part # . If the #s for the cam were different then I would suspect there might be a change in the lift and duration,overlap or other particulars. Sure would like one of the Saito gurus to chime in. P.S. One bought locally (white box) the other shipped from Japan this week.

That certainly seems to be the case for the .56's and .72's, but I never saw a .40 in the Gold/Black box. The switchover appears to have been around 2001 - 2002.

Gordon - the difference, as far as I know, is 100% cosmetic.

As far as I know there is a definite diffrence between the 72's ,(compression) and none between the 40A's.  I happen to have a gold box high cam 72.

On the 56 and 72 is it the white box version that is more desirable for C/L (low comp?) ?

This is an interesting question.  The issue is not really one of "gold box" - "white box" as it is one of ascertaining the relative compression ratio of the various motors.  In a prior post, it was agreed upon and rightly so, that this can only be accurately ascertained with a simple compression test.

As to desirability, there is none!!! It is simply a matter of personal preference!!  My Saito 72 has been modified to give me an "old school" Supertigre 46 type of run which I like, (hey, I'm older LOL).  Whatever floats your boat. 

I do feel that if you are going to get serious about 4 bangers, especially the big ones, you should amassed enough experience to know what type type of run you like.  I strongly felt I needed to "bring down" my 72.  I feel the 40A is PERFECT for me out of the box.

Are you using a screw in compressin gauge or using liquid and cc'ing method?

My Saito 72 is the oldest "hot cam high compression model. That is the only model they made when the engine first came out. Hobbico sells a compression tester for $20.00  All of the next big block purchases will be tested to know just what the drop is and what I will do about it.  I am not aware of any changes to the 56 like the 72 but the 56 will be checked and probably modified.  I know how they run.

I don't see the point on the 40A in that I  1. Know that they didn't change them and 2. They have for me a "stunt run" out of the box. My 40A runs like Tim Meeks "high zoot" Moki 51.
