The best replacement I know is a ST 46 hahahaha!!!!
Just kidding, but really not. In my opinion, Stalker 46, Double Star 50 are very good "clones" with similar running modes (althought in my opinion not the same).
My experience and final decision was to restore and refurbish an old Tigre, is working better in my Cardinal than the previous Stalker 46....
Hope it helps.

Steve:
the OS 52 4 stroke is a good idea; but different concept, no 4-2-4 rhythm.
In my Spin model, I use 20-20 fuel+5% castor oil, 12x6 prop. It's very good, the engine is a precision suisse watch.

Hi, Steve,
As a true ST 46 fan, I reluctantly suggest that the new Double Star 54 is "better" than my best ST 46!  Outstanding run character, nice, controlled power, excellent 4/2/4 break, VERY user friendly.  Several of us in New England are running the DS 54, with very good results.  Highly recommended!  Note:  this is the NEW ball bearing version, not the older DS 50.  Parts are readily available, etc.

Depends, not sure reason you are asking. I replaced a ST46 with a ST51 because the airplane needed a bit more power but it required re-working the cowl and front end. The LA 46 will do the job and is close to same size but in my opinion it's no Tigre. If you could give us a better idea of what you have in mind you will probably get better answers.

Bill, wondering.. Is the DS a drop in replacement or is it a larger engine like the ST 51.

Thanks
Bob

Hi, Bob, the DS 54 is a drop-in replacement for the ST 46.  Really impressive engine, a little lighter than the Tigre, and MUCH smoother run.  Currently pulling a 64 ounce Buso Heatwave design, about 660 squares with no trouble whatsoever.

I just had a pair of ST-46's redone by Tom Lay.  Can't wait for the weather to get better to run them in and get to flying!!!

I would recommend the ABC piston and liner set up that Brian Gardner sell. After the update you have a ball bearing  ABC Motor with more power and it will run every time exactly the same something the old ST/46 would not due. No more bad rings and worn out sleeves.

Al of these motors are nice ,but IMHO the only subtitute for a ST 46 is another ST 46!!! That said, you gots to use what you got.  In my case, my Saito 40A was purchased specifically to protect and nurture my ST 46's.

I would suggest if you have a ST 46 that is getting a little tired, why not send it to Tom Lay and let him put his touches to it.  DOC Holliday

Hi Ed,

I am getting a set of the AAC from Brian.  I'm going to replace the bearings while I'm at it.  Any hints or tips on the set up?

Thanks!

Hi Steve,

If you can swing it, it sounds like the DS 54 is the hot ticket.  I have used the DS 50, and it dropped straight in and gave comparable performance.  The 54 has more grunt!

Hi Bill     When I ran the first ABC conversion I used the hemi head that was on the motor before I converted  it to ABC. Brian told me his prototype was over compressed with the stock head.  I had been running most of my ST/46's with hemi heads for many years. I was not looking for maximum power I was looking for a certain style run. My second ST46 ABC conversion has a very different style head. It is not a hemi but has lower than stock compression. I do not have a lot of runs on it yet but it does make a lot more power than the Hemi head does and it still had the great running characteristics. Another benefit to the ABC conversion is fuel use goes down. With the stock motor I needed a 5.25-5.5 ounces of fuel to to the pattern but now it only uses 4 ounces. If you need a hemi head I can make one from a stock head for you.

When I was playing with my two ceramic P&L 46's I ordered 1/2 thickness ST 46 head shims from Bowman which gave me more options to mix and match head shims. Ceramic and ABC conversions do raise the compression and in my case with a stock head two stock shims was too much and one wasn't enough. With my hemi head, one was too much but a 1/2 thickness shim was just right.
