HI Randy,

Whist digging through my engine storage locker, I came across a Royal .45 I got from Dale Barry YEARS ago.  I never ran the engine (that I can remember) so what is your suggestion for a starting place, prop/fuel/rpm wise?  It looks like a OS .45 FSR as far as I can tell.  Going to put it n a Magnum Aaron, and I, built back in about '96 and was only flown maybe a dozen flights (or less, replaced with his NATS plane the Vector II/OS .40VF/Piped).

Hi Bill

Is the motor new? how is it setup? who set it up? is it stock?  if it is re-timed that can change things greatly depending on who and what...

I setup mine with a 12 x 5 or Bolly 12.5 x 5 2 blade ..or Bolly 12 x 6 3 blade, They run a very nice 4/2 loaded, If you want a high RPM run still in a 4 cycle the 12x4.33 N 3 blade works, or the 12,25 x 4.25 2 blade, 10% fuel 23% oil at least 1/2 syn.
I had many of them pulling Magnums years back, and also Vectors

Good questions to which I have no answer.  I got it from Dale, used, and don't know if he would remember.  I will try the stuff you recommend and go from there.

Put a 12 x 5 rev Up or similar on it and see what it will turn in a peak 2 and then see how fast it will run in a 4 cycle, we can tune from there

I can do that one day this week.  I have some of the Rev Up 12-5 govt. surplus props I have pitched to 5.

Well, it basically started raining about the time I posted this, so combined with other things I haven't been able to bench run and tach this engine.  Maybe tomorrow afternoon!

I had a Royal .45 years ago, don't remember the venturi size I used, but I do remember useing an 11/6 Master Airscrew prop.  That thing was scary strong!  I had it on a large biplane and I remember my shoulder being sore when done flying.  It was a very smooth runner and had no bad habits, it was just too strong for me so I ended up selling it.  Good luck with yours and maybe buy an arm sling or two to put in your flight box! LOL
