needle valve position
« on: August 20, 2011, 02:21:45 PM »
Looking for some advice. I did a search for the hole in the spray bar placement and came up with some vague info. If you have a motor with the spray bar running Thur the venture do you point the hole directly pointing down in line with the venturi or do you angle it slightly back or forward to get the best fuel suction. What is the preferred placement?

I'll be brave and give you my "uneducated" input.  There is a popular idea that the orifice will work well once rotated "just out of view" when looking down the venturi.  I have tried that and I have tried aligning the orifice pointing down so that it is "in alignment" with the venturi opening and air flow.  No hard evidence but my sense is that pointing the hole down gives slightly better engine runs, at least for me.

One side bar, if you have an spray bar with 2 holes (orifices) then rotate the spray bar so that both holes are just out of sight with looking down into the venturi.  (The two hole spray bars are not exactly 180 degrees apart so one oriention would allow you to see one or both of the holes and rotating about 180 degrees should have both holes disappear from view.

Theres some drivle somewhere , that the hole fwd. ( or Rear ? ) is essential for hot restarts raceing LA's .

Think they bias it back 45-60 deg , for stunt . May depend on the engine ?

Didn't search hard enough.  :)

As long as the hole is out of sight (for a single hole needle valve body), the draw that the engine "sees" is the same.

There is a "sweet spot where the draw will jump by about 15%. It is about 2 degrees wide and is approximately 90 degrees to the flow through the venturi, but it usually can be found only when using test tools and a constant source of airflow through the venturi. Catching the sweet spot "by eye" is almost impossible, just DBL if you catch it.

This is a verifiable effect if you want to take the time to measure the draw accurately on a test rig. It certainly isn't "drivle" (sic).
