On some Classic era stunt ships, I have seen hub extensions shown on the plans. Are these a viable way to shift engine weight rearward ? Seems like the slight weight shift of the engine is negated by the weight of the hub ext. . Any one have any practical experience with this?

Most of the classic era planes were designed to have prop shaft extensions to allow smoother cowlings and spinner fits rather than to shift the engine rearward. The engines of that era, as a rule, had very short shafts, which made it very difficult to get good spinner/cowling fits.
