What size props do you guys use for the Saito 56?
-
Hi Crist
I have sold many props for that engine. Paul Walker used a bolly 12 x 4.5 3 blade
many others use the bolly 13 x 6 or 13 x 5 2 blade
I have also had people use a 13 x 4.5 3 blade

Up here Keith is using a Rev-Up 12-5 at about 10400 RPMs and I use a Zinger 12-5 at about 9700 RPMs.

I ran an Eather 14X4.5 2 blade with the large venturi at 8800. It was a beast! No GP in the corners either with the lower RPMs.

Doug,
Was that a flat back prop?
-
Yes it was a flatback prop. I have ran the 1/2 UC as well with very good results.
Tric to this setup was the very large venturi. The motor was really breathing well and 8800rpms was really right in the strong power range for that motor.

Thanks Doug. Not sure what you mean by "1/2 UC"? UC =undercambered but the 1/2 stumps me.
-
Crist,
!/2 means he just barely UCs the prop. Just enough to know it is there. Full undercamber is twice as much. Eather is very exact in how he produces he props. You can count on 1/2 UC being exactly half the normal amount if UC.
I hope this helps.

What size plane is this Saito 56 /14"prop flying?
-
Doug,
Thanks for the clarification.

I sure tried a lot of different props on a Saito 56. The only rule I discoved is that it's entirely dependent on the plane/engine combination. I built a plane and went through probably 30 props before I tried this 12x4 eather 3 blade UC prop. This particular one really made the plane come alive with the Saito 56. I transferred the entire setup; engine, prop and tank to the next version of the same design. Only a very few changes in the the airframe and of comparable weights. It flew OK with that prop, but nothing to write home about. Went through another 30 2 and 3 blade props from 11" to 13.5 inches. and finally settled on an 11.5 x 4.25 three blade Eather. It was cut down from a 14x4 so had really wide blades. Worked very well.
