Break in procedure for true ABC engines
« on: January 02, 2018, 12:40:25 PM »
Hi folks, happy New Year

I have a NIB Tower 40 that I want to break in and use.

Should I use a break in procedure like the Brodak 40—multiple short runs and allow to cool in between—or is there another preferred approach?

That would be as good a place to start as any. I would bolt up a 10-4 prop and do the 2 minute routine, and after a dozen cycles or see see how it runs with a 11-4 and reacts to the fuel line pinch test. The Tower .40 is a true ABC I believe and is a pretty long lasting engine. A local guy had one in a Tucker Special and after several seasons of running, he had an issue where the main bearing varnished up and caused some issue. The only time I have ever heard of any one having a problem with a Tower.40 We took it apart, cleaned up the shaft and bearing and all was well.
  Type at you later,

Run it warm up on the 4/2 switch. Not cold/wet/rich 4 cycle only. Multiple short runs to heat cycle the materials to start with and then some longer stuff.

By the way Geoff I'm doing a run of FP40 sets (interchangible with the tower) that are stunt timed etc.

Happy new year mate.

Brian
