has anyone had this problem?
« on: September 02, 2007, 06:17:28 PM »
I have posted before about the Stalker 66.I got it running consistently but here is the problem. It breaks normal on inside turns but goes lean on outside turns and stays lean through the maneuver. It runs a nice 4 cycle upright and inverted level.I had the tank shimmed way down at one point, then went to even with spraybar then shimmed down slightly but it doesn't make any difference.I will try going the other way but this will be the wrong way per what the norm is.I also tried a different tank. That didnt change anything. Any suggestions?

  Hi Jim,
I had similar problems in an upright engined ship recently. A Montgomery models "Ramrod".

Powered with a healthy Merco .35 (its only a 440 sq" ship) it suddenly started to slow down on outsides and go too fast on insides.

After a bit of head scratching I installed a new glow plug. Instant fix.

Wrote the plane off about 3 flights later! HB~>

Oh well, it was getting tired and I was looking for an excuse to build another one. **)

 Cheers, Rob.

I cured this problem on a Fox .19 mounted on a Lil' Dynamite with the engine inverted by opening the needle valve several clicks. It always died on a outside loop at the 2 o'clock position.I believe, in my situation, the fuel was being thrown away from the glowplug so i just let it have some more. It doesn't quit on the outsides now.

If the uniflow tube outlet inside the tank is not centered (vertically) it can cause that problem.
  You might try another tank.

I don't know much about the Stalker .66 (tho Alan Resinger has one in his Firecracker...kewl!), but thinking it's a rear exhaust & Schneurle ported, it might need to be mounted sideways (or close), like the Retro Discovery.  They made those things for some years, before they changed to the planes to sidemount. I know Dave Simons sent his from Australia to Ukraine to get it converted...it was his idea to go sidemount, as I understand it.  H^^ Steve

Thanks guys, Steve you might have hit it. I have tried everything possible, including different tank. I have run 3 other Stalkers without any problems, but as I understand the 66 was kind of a different breed. I would bet that would fix it,but Im not going to the trouble. I shoehorned my Stalker 61SE into the Avanti. This also caused me to loose the extra nose weight.

As per Randy Smith - Fuel , GLO-plug and running tips

"A lot of times the plug problems show up as rich inside maneuvers and leaner outsides; this happens because gravity and centrifugal force ,forces the oil-fuel charge down on the element on insides, thus cooling the coil and pulls it away on the outside maneuvers, letting it naturally go leaner.  I have seen this problem instantly cured by simply changing plugs. Please  do not be  afraid  to put in a  new  glo plug , or try different types of plugs ."
