PA40 RE Lite - what makes it a "Lite"

Looking a the specs for the PA40 RE Lite it is 8.5oz. What is different from the original PA40 pipe motor that makes it "Lite"?

Better ask Randy.  Obvoiusly the weight.  My understanding is that is for a rear exhaust muffler for classic ships calling for an ST46.  More HP and reliability.

The engine is just over 8 ounces
The VF 40 is 11.5
The PA RE standard is 10.25 ounces
The PA 40 Ultralite Merlin will put out as much power than the VF 40 pretty easy
The OPS 40 we used also were 11 ounces

I think saving over 3 ounces on a 40 is what makes it light, When you compare Power, The same things go for an Aero Tiger they are 7.9 ounces

Yes 3 oz reduction is impressive. What I was getting at, was what changes were made i.e. new lighter bearings, redesign lighter shaft, lighter case. Seems that this is a real purpose design stunt engine not just an RC engine with stunt timing (we don't need to be able to drive it into the ground from 200 ft up). I assume with a header muffler it should be a great Classic fit and the rear exhaust will keep the lines of the fuse clean and the oil off the ship some.

Hi Dennis

It is over 3 ounces, really closer to 4 on some 40s comparing it to. And it is still a dual ball bearing motor that will last a very long time
The entire engine was designed from scratch as a purpose built Stunt Engines, as were the entire Merlin line of PA engines.
It does use the same header, no need to change that.
It has pulled many Classic ships and many 700 sq in and 700 sq in plus ships also, a couple have won the NATs. Plus one was used in Zhangs Skywriter at the Worlds in 2004.
Keith Trostle used one in his TA 152 Focke Wulf and won Classic at the NATs with it a few years back.
It powers up or down incredibly well. better than anything I had seen before

First thing I noticed is a 1/4-28 prop shaft, instead of the 5/16-24 of the rest of the PA's. Everything is smaller, except the cubic inches. Randy Powell has the only one around here that I've seen run, in his Wooley Cobra and Simmons Shoestring on header muffler. Nice engine, as expected.  y1 Steve

  I haven't taken my Light .40 apart but I bet you saved a lot of weight on the crankshaft alone.  Randy can you tell me in your opinion how the PA Light compares in power to the OPS .40  I understand up front 3 ounce lighter is huge.

Hi John

It is not an opinion, I have ran the motors and plotted a torque and HP curve, the Standard PA 40 and the Merlin 40 will both put out as much or more power as the OPS 40.
And ..if.. you put too large a venturie, and  too much compression, and  too much nitro the OPS will charge.
If you want the Merlin to put out a lot of power the standard Venturie will need to be sized properly, It comes stock with a smaller one than you would see on an OPS
