Plain bearing ST60?

Hello All,
             Out of the blue someone has offered to give me a NIB ST60. I am told that it was purchased in 1980. I know not if it is the stunt version or somewhat different R/C engine (how do you tell?). What puzzles me is that the gentleman swears that it is a plain bearing engine(?). I thought all versions of the ST60 were balltaced. Perhaps someone could confirm or deny this, also how do you recognize the stunt version from the others? I recall things like lite case and V60 and ST 60 K, but which is the version desired for the fabled 4-2-4 run? Whichever version it is, you can be sure that the NIB one is NOT the desired stunt type. I never get that lucky!

Andrew - good to meet up today at Old Warden. Quite a good day for a change, wasn't it, and I'm pleased 'cause I brought the model home in one piece!
The precursor to the ST60 light case - I know for sure of a PB 45 and 51, and this developed into the BB 51, 56, and 61.
I don't know if the PB engines got as far as a 60 though. Nothing would surprise me about Super Tigre!

I have a big case plain bearing ST51  but I have not seen the 60 in a PB.  Please post a photo if you get it

The 56 and 51 plain bearing ST is the same basic motor

  As soon as I get it, I will post the obligatory photo.It will probably turn out to be something very common and not at all interesting! I bet that it is not the fabled stunt version!

  The NIB ST60 turned up and my apologies, it is a ball-raced version after all! So much for third party descriptions. The good news is that it is a V 60 with muffler lugs. The liner has what I take to be Perry port slots, visible ar bottom dead center.
  I assume that this is one of the desired stunt versions? If so what size venturi and NVA do I need and what sort of fuel, prop size and revs would put me in the right area to start experimenting?
  This example seems to have a very high comptression ratio, from idle hand flicking. Does the standard engine need any significant reduction in CR?

Hi Andrew

The motor runs very well with a true venturie sized at # 14 drill, the PA or ST 60 NVA works with it and you will use a 13 x 5 or 13 x 6 2 blade 12.5 x 6 3 blade are common for this motor, I setup 100s of these for stunt flyers and if yours in in good shape it will give you many years of good service.
You do not need to lower the CR but some will add maybe 1 head shim at times, depends on what prop and nitro you use
.
A typical setup here was a Bolly 12.5 x 6 3 blade with 5% nitro fuel 23 % oil 1/2 castor
