OS Max 46 VF Engine
« on: December 14, 2009, 01:24:14 AM »
Hi guys,

I don't know anything about the OS Max 46 VF or the OS 40 VF Engines. It seems like there is a lot of the OS 40 VF Engines out there but I don't hear anything about the OS 46 VF, does this engine performance the same as the 40?? I would guess you would run the 46 on a pipe the same as the 40, probably a different length???? Is it better to have the 40 or the 46???? Does the 46 weigh less than the 40, or more???? How much fuel does these engines need???? I looked into search and didn't seem to find much on the subject, maybe just me, Gary

The VF 40/46 are some of the best engines ever strait out of the box (not counting the special built engines Randy Smith sells).  I run the 46 and 40 VF's.  Here at 4600' MSL, the 46 has about the same power as the 40 on the coast.  Search for "VF 40" or "VF 46" in any of the Forums and some detailed info from Paul Walker, Brett Buck and Randy Smith will show up.  What is working for me is strait from these folks - on the 46 - .275 venturi with a Aero Products needle valve assembly, Randy’s VF 40 pipe set at 18.75“ to the first baffle, 10400 – 10600 RPM launch.  Call Randy he can delineate the VF 46 detail very concisely.

Norm

HI Gary

They work very well, I setup over a hundred of these motors for CL use, Many people such as Ted Fancher , Bill Rich, Windy , Ed Southwick Billy Werwage etc. used these with great success, I personally liked the 46 much better than the 40, it had much more power reserve and would spin a 12 inch 3 blade or a 12.5 inch 2 blade with ease.
I still have many many parts for these  VF 40 and 46 engines  such as 46 stock P|S  and  special AAC 46 piston sleeves
Bearings   crankshafts  of course I have or make venturies  NVA and pipes and headers for these also
We used the 51 pipe on the 46 and the 40-45 pipe for the 40
The 40 best prop I have ever seen is the Bolly 11.75 x 4.25 cut to 11.5 inches
The 46 work very well on the Bolly 12 x 4.25 3 blade or  12.25 x 4.25 2 blade these were pretty much bolt on and fly fits on both motors
we ran both at 17.5 to 18.5 inches on pipe tuning ,that will depend on prop selection engine RPMs

Regards
Randy

I love my Randy .46!

I would suspect that you see more on the .40's is because when these were so popular you could run smaller lines with the .40's. Many objected to ".018 Chains" needed for the .46's. Never noticed! Gobs of dependable power...

If you use the 46VF, just make sure you have a big tank. I ran one for a bit and it has a ton of power, but really sucks the fuel. Well, that figures.   ;D
