Title: Os Max La 46 5% vs 10 % fuel
Post by: kevin king on January 24, 2022, 11:28:25 AM
Is there a noticable difference in quality of engine run, aside from taking up less fuel in the tank, less harsh on the finish, less cost and a small loss of power?

I haven't run a lot of 5% fuel in my LA.46s but it's pretty much like you suspect. Your run time will be longer, needle may be a bit more finicky, less toxic ona dope finish and just a bit down on power, but depending on the model you might not notice.
  Type at you later,

Myself, I prefer the 5% for the LA 46, but will run 10% if I have no 5% available.

Kevin ,
Under 25 c - 5% works well . When it gets hotter than that the 10% helps .

After coaxing from a few guys I went to 10% as the base fuel.

Kevin,

I've always used 5% in my LA 46.  APC 11x5 will give a nice stunt run and do the pattern easily on 4 oz. of fuel.

Most of the time, I rarely use more than 5% in any engine.   In the summer, I might have to use 10% depending on how heavy the plane is and what engine I have on it.  It might be necessary to change props as well.

At this time of year, with the cool days and low humidity, I can cut the nitro to 2% and still have enough power.

When I bought my first OS LA .46 in 1998 I used a formula which my then flying partner preferred and that was: 7.5 22 &3! The 7.5 was Nitro @.98%pure, 22% Castor Oil and 3% synthetic! Lately I have changed from 10/ 11/11 to 7/11/11 with not discernable changes! If the weather gets really gummy here in the south I'll revert to 10/11/11 to make up for what our humidity and heat take out! It's not too unusual to have heat in the range of 95 to 100 degrees F with humidity of 95 to 98% to go along with it! Obviously these days aren't my favorites for work or play!
