OS MAX 10 FP R/C ?
« on: October 20, 2010, 01:14:14 PM »
As I am learning everyday new things at this wonderful message board. I will always have a question.

A old friend of mine gave me a OS MAX 10 FP R/C engine yesterday and since I havent dabbled in R/C in quite some time I would like to convert this to R/C use.

DO they sell a venturi for this engine for C/L? I know I could jsut tighten the throttle to full open.

You can get a nice venturi from Jim Lee. He's on the forum here in the Vendors section-Lee Machine Shop.

You will still need a needle valve assembly and they can be had on the forum here too with some asking around.

It's getting very difficult to get a genuine OS10 NVA. Thankfully Lee machine makes the venturis as they are not available as genuine OS parts anymore , metal backplates ditto Thankfully the FP has the metal backplate. The OS15 NVA and venturi are still available and some will tell you that you can use them. You can, kind of. The venturi has a larger bore and the NVA is not a direct fit some shiming is necessary and it looks clunky on the engine.
The 10 is really fun engine to use. Cheap on fuel, good power, and long lasting. A nice change of pace every now and then.

The 15 needle valve does look out of scale. The 15 size venturi fits the crankcase opening, same with the 15 size needle valve. The needle valve opening is centered, or close to it. I haven't run this new RC 10 yet, so don't know if this conversion works. One possible issue that occurs to me is the spigot opening. Might be too large, making the needle too crude to meter an accurate setting for the FP10. Anyone have experience with this set up? So far I haven't been able to locate a part designated as an FP10 needle valve. I did obtain an OS10 needle valve. Must have been for an older engine. Since it was too small in diameter and width. The FP10 looks like a small gem. Bet it would be an interesting engine to power a jr. Streak and the like. I purchased the engine with that combination in mind. But went with an FP15. A fun fast combination. Love flying it. The FP10 would probably make a more docile plane. Perhaps a more stunt friendly way to go, if that is your interest. Always have been intrigued with the idea of showing up with a well trimmed jr. Streak to compete in classic. The current FP15 Streak will do all the tricks -- in three minutes or less. Optimum fun. Probably not an optimum score.

The Jr Ringmaster or Flite streak on an OS10 is a killer combination. Easily superior to the 15 on these models. With a set of .012 lines  from 52 to 55 feet and no more then an 7/5 prop your good to go.
The TD09 is another great candidate plus the Enya 09. This is cheap fun and a break from the more 'serious' models.

In a pinch you can just wire the throttle wide open -- or wherever you want it.

I'd be mostly worried about the 15 venturi being too large, and not letting the engine develop enough vacuum to meter fuel well.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

If the needle valve works, I can handle the venturi. The FP15 is great fun on my jr. Streak. Quite fast and maneuverable with a 1/4 ounce in the tail. I use a chicken hopper and a tongue muffler. We like venturis in our club when we can have them, as opposed to wired open carbs. Look better. Work better.

Like as has been mentioned, the OS 10FP and 10FSR use a common venturi and NVA, but the NVA is not like one used on ANY other OS engine I have ever seen.  I am not sure what can be used in that compartment since the plentiful OS 10"S" NVA does not fit at all.

The OS 15FP venturi IS a good bit larger in bore than the 10FP/FSR venturi (especially in the size range of these small engines), but at Huntersville Jim Lee had some 10FP venturi made up, ready to go.  I know he can supply those.

I have a couple FPs and a few FSRs that I have plans to use in the near future.  Fortunately I have NVAs in them, but am needing some venturi, so I turned to Jim Lee for assistance. ;D

Strong little suckers, the .10FPs.  Great for Flite Streak JR., Ringmaster Jr., Circus Prince, Flying Clown, etc., basically any of the older models developed for the old Fox .15X, K&B .15GH, and such.  The FSR has a potential to turn up even more than the FP.
