OS Max-1 .35

Pulled this motor out of a Nobler I picked up last weekend that seen better days.

 Upon pulling the motor out I noticed it to be in rather good condition with excellent compression and just a odd NVA that Ive never seen first hand.

 My question is how good are these motors? Any good for stunt?
Any value?

 I have my share of .35 size motors and dont really need another I know Ill probably never use so Im at a standstill of putting it for sale, trading it away, or hanging on to it cause it may be the holy grail of stunt motors lol.

  Before stunt flyers  went to larger motors this was the considered the best stunt motor for the event. Many said better that the Fox .35. It is perfect for a vintage 35 size  plane. That is a correct needle valve for the motor. This motor in a G Nobler could be flown at the highest level in the right flyers hands. y1

Depends on your definition of better. The Max I is more powerful than the S version, but I think you get a smoother, more stunt friendly run from the S. The Max I breaks hard and when it does, it's a rocket.

 Let me give a little history on the Max1. Most people are not aware of this motor as it was not imported in huge numbers as the later OS motors. These motors were used for FF and combat for many years as the break was hard as mentioned above. I had three of them and used them in very large Class C FF. I ran crankcase pressure and 11/4 props at 15,000 rpm. They came with different size venture inserts.  In the late 1960 I started to fly a lot of larger stunt models and my Fox 35 didn't do well. I tried the Max 1 with a 10/6 prop and a home made venture insert at around .272-.280. This was good but to much speed so I put one of my old 11/4 FF props on it and I was in stunt heaven.  Now this was before we were into low pitch props to let the motor rev up. The Max1 is well built so it will run at higher RPM for stunt. I was running around 9200-10000 for stunt and no muffler. It was loud but I used it until the ST/40-46 came out. If you use a muffler use a tube type not a stub.
 At the time I did not realize that lower pitch props could make hot motors run in a stunt mode I just fell into it in this situation. ~^ ~^

   I have never seen a .35 -I. I have several .35III engines. Are they similar in any way? I even have a couple with a odd ball R/C carb. I have never run one, and one of these days will build  or buy a "mule" airplane that I can change out engines on easily to test with.

The 29/35 Max-I dates from 1954, the Max-II from 1957 and the Max-III from 1959. The Max-II's are odd though because, apart from the Max-II .15, neither the 29 or 35 have any -II on the case, just Max. Also there are two versions of the Max-II with the later one having a larger crankshaft and crankcase casting similar to the Max-III.

       Hi James:

       I can not comment on an OS Max .35I, but I can speak about the OS Max .35 III.  This engine was a dream to use! Very easy to start and run with a lot pf power! It is one of those engines that I wish that I still owned!  Use it and enjoy it!

For Stunt  the  35-S  was by far the best  of them
