Title: Re: Os LA 46 No Nitro
Post by: Ken Culbertson on June 06, 2019, 09:28:44 AM
One of the guys I fly with used to run -0- Nitro but has switched back to 10% when he is forced to fly an IC.  Personally none of my batteries use Nitro either.
It should work.  My 46LA runs on just about anything and it has run on 0 nitro.  I don't fly it much anymore but when I do I just use stock AIR 10.

Anyone ever successfully run the LA 46 with no nitro fuel. I use these engines for practice and I thought it would save some money in fuel.

I haven't seen this done for an 46LA, but the smaller engines (20/25FP and 25LA) will run on FAI fuel. It makes them very fussy to start and operate, but it will run. I question the use of FAI fuel just for practice because it's not that much cheaper but it is much more aggravating. I would expect you to lose more flights to bad needles than you save on fuel cost.

My experience was that you want to at least prime it with regular fuel, like, 10-15%, which will reduce the difficulty in starting it with the hair-trigger choking and needling required. I could do it, but I quickly reverted to a glue syringe full of Cox Racing fuel to prime it, made life much better.

One way to find out, of course.

My os clone magnum gp40 rc flew well with 0 nitro...80/20 castor. The only reason I don't fly 0 nitro now is being too lazy to source materials and make it. Last I checked it wasn't really a lot cheaper to make.

YES FAI 80/20 ish will run but the start and run is better/easier/more consistent IMO with 5% to 12% Vitamin N

I seriously doubt any significant fuel cost savings.....going 0 Nitro    vs 5% to 12%....but I never tried it....

Obviously some day we will have no Nitromethane to play with...sad day then... as I have a lot of Cox/Cyclone/NV/Fora/engines that love 20% ~40% nitro

My mate successfully runs his 46LA with 0 nitro. The engine is so versatile, it starts from 1 or 2 flip everytime, transitions are predictable and smooth.

The only engines I've used for stunt have been the Merco 35, Enya 45 model 6001, ST G51 stunt, OS 40 and 46VF's, Irvine 40RLS, Stalker 61 and Enya 61 CXLRS. All have been run on zero nitro, generally give one flick starts and I find needling is quite easy. YMMV but I'd bet the 46LA will work just as well on zero nitro.
