TOWER 40 : Blocking the Boost Port[s] ?
« on: September 02, 2012, 01:11:17 AM »
Greetings fellas from France.

Please pardon my ignorance with this question.

I usually block the boost port on some of my engines , TT36 , ST G34 , Magnum 36 , MDS 38  etc.

Took my Tower 40 apart to find it has more than one 'boost' port  ?

Which one is the correct one to block please ?

Thanks for any contriburions ,

Robin.

I have flown Tower 40 with and without blocked boost port and could not tell any difference in how it ran.

Much obliged ,

Robin.

Sig Champion 10% nitro, 20%oil, half and half, stock muffler pressure to uniflow, Fox 2 volt plug, Supercool 11 x 5 petalblade prop.  65 ft 015 lines.  As a friend remarked, the engine runs like a sewing machine.  I changed from an unblocked crankcase, when it started losing too much fuel out the front end, to a blocked crankcase.  Used the same crank, piston and liner.

If you use JB Weld, a heat gun will remove it in a chunk. Don't be too fastidious about cleaning the case before you apply the JB Weld. If you wish, you can carve & sand a soft balsa plug to shape and let it swell up to fit.

Most modern engines have two bypasses and one boost port, which is between the two bypasses. It's diagonally across from the exhaust on the Tower .40,  FP's and LA's. You can see the timing difference when you remove the cylinder head.  The odd one is the boost port.  H^^ Steve

HI Jim,

Are the Supercool props still available?  I had the site book marked on one of my "late" computers, but not now.

Thanks!

Robin, to answer your initial question, the Tower 40 cylinder has four ports but only one is the boost port. The boost port is the almost square one which opens lowest down the stroke. The two smaller rectangular ports each side of the boost port are the Schneurle transfer ports and the rectangular port opposite the boost port is the exhaust.

Whether you block the boost port or not is for you to decide. As has been shown here already, opinions vary as to whether it achieves anything.
