OS 46 vf gas milage
« on: September 02, 2011, 05:23:20 PM »
I have ordered a nva and venturi from Randy, the venturi I guess will ne .275 and a PA nva. I also ordered a 12x3.33 three blade prop. I was hearing that the VF will need 7.5 ozs. I have a 6 OZ. tank and would n not be able to squeeze  in a 7 oz tank let alone a 7.5. The 6 oz tank is 1 15/16 wide I have 2 1/16 width between the sides. I dont think a 2 inch wide tank will get me the additinal 1.5 ozs.
Is the VF that big a gas hog. The motor is going into a Pathfinder LE 57 in span 640 squares.

I would notch the wing (if it's not too late) and make a box tank like Randy Powell described in his "Slider" repair posts. Pete Peterson has been flying an AAC .46VF (ask Randy Smith) in a Saturn, and I think he's made at least 3 tanks for it, each bigger than the last.  Looks to me like you need more than 1" tank depth. Probably 1.25" depth would be ok. Might also save a lot of room by having brass 90 deg fittings soldered onto the front exit tubes,  or relocating the tubes under the header.

You can also put a "sump" on the tank, like I did for my PA .51/SV-11. You can also search for that thread, which was in late May. In that case, you can try the 6 oz and then expand it, but I started with a 6 oz and wish it had been 7 oz. I can still run out of fuel on 15%, so I'm adding a dome for the overflow, to be sure it's really full. Open up your tank and you'll probably see that it cannot possibly be filled to capacity, the way the overflow tube is installed. My "dome" will be made from a 1/4" axle cap (hammer-on wheel retainer, basically) I bought at Ace Hardware.   :P Steve

It has been suggested that I go with a Sullivan plastic clunk tank that I can fit in my space. It is a 8.8 OZ and will fit in the tank compartment with room to spare. I am still waiting for my order from Randy Smith to arrive. When that happens I'll know what the Venturi Diameter he is supplying me with.

Hi Peter,

The plastic clunk will be the best solution, IMHO.  There are several ways of setting up the internals, I have always used the Bob Hunt/Dean Pappas set up.  I don't have a link handy, but there should be available reference somewhere out there.

Either way, I have seen many clunk tanks work great, and the biggest problems seems to lie with not getting a good seal at the "plug" (where the lines enter the tank).  Several NATS have been won with clunk tanks.

My .40VF takes 4 to 4.5 oz. on a cool day at sea level on a 68-oz, 700-square-inch airplane.
