OS 40FP Steel X ABN and Wear issues
« on: February 26, 2007, 09:06:44 PM »

I have read about the Philly OS 40FP setup and I tried on a used OS 35FP with a Pathfinder. Indeed the setup works very very well, very constant from start to finish.

The tach was reading about 11000rpm at launch and I am wondering if at this RPM it will wear off the FP engine much sooner then a setup that uses a larger prop with less RPM.

Some FPs are ABN and older ones have Steel Liner and Piston, which one will  last longer?

Welcome to the Philly flyers. They will both last a long time. That's the right rpm. Don't try running them slow with a big prop. They will overheat and run run run away. Sounds like you're in the zone. When FPs are NOT run in THE ZONE people act like this  HB~>  Some of these engines in my club have long histories having outlived many a plane. Don't run the steel cylinder engines over lean. That'll possibly hurt. But club members often laugh about one mythic iron FP40 we know well. It's now lugging a 53 ounce oil soaked Oriental (pulling it very nicely by the way) after being abused in most ways including shaft run. That engine has been flying for over ten years. The ABN engines are more tolerant of lean runs. But still, it's a bad idea. You are probably using good fuel, also an important caution. We all burn Powermaster %22 (50/50) 5%, 10% also works. We love these engines. I have 8 planes currently powered by FPs and Tower 40s (an FP clone with a chrome cylinder, instead of ABN). Club members fly another 40 or so planes using FPs.

I have an old, old, old, old, (did I say OLD??) FP 40.  IT's a OLD steel/iron engine.  How many flights???  I haven't a clue.  I bought it from Byron Barker who tried to wear it out on a profile (complete with a broken lug) and it has been in service for me over 10 years.  It still cranks and runs like the day I got it!  Always used either Sig 1/2 and 1/2 or all castor.  Switch back and forth with no problem (other than having to twist the needle a *little*).

For a plain bearing engine, it is the best "4-2" .40 I have! (porting was changed from the get go!)  It swings a reworked Rev-up 12-5 cut to 11"-5 with authority!  Sorta like my 40 odd year old Enya 35...... just can't wear it out! **) **)

Hi Dennis,

Thanks Dennis, I already have a Philly Flyers T-Shirt too :)

Thank you for sharing the setup with us on previous post, indeed this setup is AWESOME.

It is good to know the engine will last long time running this way. I have mixed 1/2 Gallon of CoolPower 15% Heli with 1/2Gallon of home made brew fuel with 20% all Castor, then added a little more Castor to get about 7,5% Nitro 22% Lube total.

I am also curious why the OS 35FP sells for twice the amound of an 40FP on Ebay. Is the 35 that much better?

I haven't noticed that the 35 costs that much more, usually they seem neck and neck. I think there are many more 40s around though, could be that if someone gets a hankering for a 35 they might bid an individual engine up. If anything, I've found the 35s just a tad more high strung. Jack Weston has a 35 in a Vector 40 set up the way you know about. It runs great. The break may be slightly harder. It may be a two extra head gasket engine, I'll ask him next time I see him. The 35 runs great, but so do the 40s. And, of course, you've tamed your beast. Now and then I've heard flyers recommend one or the other. But in my experience they're very similar. If you find a good buy in either size go for it. Unless you're a member of FPs Anonymous and already own a shelf full. Alas I'm there. Although fully half of my FPs (and FP clones) are mounted and flying.
