OS .40 LA vs ENYA .40SS
« on: January 23, 2012, 02:45:46 PM »
Hi Guys,

Which of the two is heavier? More powerful? Best run?

I would like to use one of these two engines, with a tongue muffler, for a Fancherized twister I am building.

The  FT is three inches longer, has has two inches of extra elevator/stabilizer and has 1/4 inch wood for the tail.

Thanks,

-Daniel H^^

Well considering that Bill Draper won the Gold Cup in England more than once using an Enya SS 40 I would go with that.

Wonderful engine that exudes quality but perhaps I am biased since I have one!

Hi Daniel,

I do not have an Enya 40SS, but if I did, I would use it in place of the LA .40.  Over the years the LA .40 has proven to me to not be up to par with the LA .46 in user friendliness, engine run consistency, etc., etc..

The LA 40 is problematic because almost every setup I've seen uses too large a prop.  People seem to forget it is not a 46.  Another charactersitc, which seems to apply to almost every engine combo where they build two different sizes on the same case(G.21-29-35-46, Magnum 32-36, Fox 29-35 etc) the larger displacement makes a better stunt engine.  The smaller one seems to prefer running at higher rpms.  I believe it has something to do with the size of the cylinder ports relative to the cylinder diameter since they usually use the same machining on both size liners, or they de-tune the timing on the larger one a bit.

The Enya 40SS is going to be the heavier of the two.  But, it is a nice running and powerful engine.  One of my favorites.  I suggest it may be a bit more motor than the Fancherized Twister needs.  I do use a tongue muffler on my Enya as your initial e-mail specifies.  Here are my thoughts on the Enya 40SS composed about six years ago:

I have gotten good performance on my OS LA40 with a MACS muffler (not tongue) with an APC 11x4.  That setup is more a constant speed run.  I have used the LA40/MACS on a Fancherized Twister and it seems to be a good match as regards power and engine weight.

It sounds like you have the good fortune of a couple different choices.  Enjoy your flying!

Thanks for the replies.
David, your article inspired me to purchase the enya a few months ago. Thanks!
I think i'll try the OS .40LA on the twister, even thought the engine has a bad rap. If it doesnt perform, Ihave an OS .35 stunt I can put in it.
The enya will go in a ARC brodack cardinal.
Regards.

Daniel - I am glad my feeble scribblings helped!  Some additional info on the LS40/MACS...  I used an APC 11 x 4 prop with this setup which seemed to work best for me and the model.  Other sizes have also been recommended for this engine.  So, don't hesitate to explore other options.  Best regards - DZ
