Brodak .40 backplate info FYI
« on: January 20, 2012, 12:01:47 PM »
Since there is a discussion in another thread regarding the Brodak .40, I wanted to share my recent experience.  Before break-in I found all engine bolts to be pretty loose.  No problem and easily tightened.  I broke the engine in exactly as recommended by the manufacturer.  Great engine!  Excellent runs.  But, after the break-in all three backplate bolts had stripped out of the case.  I found that they were only long enough to capture one thread.  I was unable to find replacement bolts that were slightly longer (the case holes are threaded deep into the hole).  My solution was to shave about 1/16" off the outside surface of the back plate.  The screws re-seated with no more issues.  Just FYI if you have the same experience.  Great, great engine!

Hi Paul,,  I checked my B-40 and found about the same condition. My case was not countersunk quite as deep and I have about 3 threads engaging. The bolts are 3 X 6 mm, but my case will accept another 2 mm. My Du-Bro catalog shows a 3 x 8 mm socket head cap screw (Cat. #2122) so that's where I'm going, easier than thinning the cover.

That is the kind of issue that John Brodak should be made aware of.  The B40 and 25 are both out of stock now, but this problem could easily be resolved in the next batch.
