red headed stunt run
« on: June 04, 2010, 07:41:11 PM »
I have a Midwest Magician about half done that i would like to finish up using my .35 red head McCoy. I have been told they give a good 4 2 4 stunt run by some folks, and that they want to run steady two stroke by others. What say you?

From my own personal experience, the McCoy Redheads give a nice 4-2-4 style of stunt run using 10/25 fuel. However, they don't seem to like mufflers and tend to overheat with anything on them that actually makes them quieter. That problem has kept me from ever using a McCoy in a contest.

Thanks for the reply Clint. I was starting to think i wasn't going to get one. No muffler is ok with me, i wont be flying in any contest.

I run quite a few Red Heads, and they do run a great 4-2. I do not run mufflers on them, and they really are not all that loud. Run 10 % nitro, and at least 25% mostly castor fuel in the 35's and 5% nitro in the 40's. 10-6 APC seems to work well on the 35's, and a 12-6 APC cut to 11 with the square cut tips on the 40's. They run supperbly on profiles. Run a hot plug like a Thunderbolt R/C long.

I make my own tanks, but it is basically just a square wedge 4 oz. uniflow tank. McCoy Red Heads will run well on either standard vent, or uniflow. Lately I have been getting good runs plugging the uniflow, and running standard venting.

Oops; Thanks for the complement Philip. You will love the Magician. They are really fun to fly. This is my 3rd one, and I have another in the finishing stages.

Philip, just as a note, be sure to pressure check your tank. I was using a reworked 4 oz. uniflow with my Redhead on a Firecat Saturday , got a runaway that i couldn't stop and fried the engine. That was after 2 good runs on the ground, engine now has zero compression! Checked the tank when i got home and sure enough a good sized hole had opened up on the side.

Ray; You can get the compression back. I have done it to many Red Heads. Remove the piston and cyl. Put the piston in the bottom of the cyl. dome side up, and place it on an anvil. Then take a wide flat punch and tap the dome of the piston with a hammer a few times lightly. Then check the fit. If it grows to much, you will have to lap it back in. Do not hit it hard, or you will break the piston. Just a few good taps and try the fit. After running it will get a shiney band about 3/16" to a 1/4" wide at the top of the piston. You might as well try it. What have you got to loose. I do mine about every two years to restore compression.

Hah! Ray is quite familiar with that trick!

Ray --

I'm "borrowing" a McCoy for Brodak OTS. You (I think it was you) told me something about the McCoy needle valves I can't remember.  :-[ What was it?

Jim , i had already used that trick on this engine, could try it again and see what happens, thanks for the tip.  Larry, the flexible springy thing broke on the needle, i soldered a piece of piano wire on it. Good luck at Brodak's i might just suprise ya with a visit there!

OK. After my previous post, I went back to my workshop and back to McCoy piddling. The spraybar was loose so I torqued the nut a tad.

Uhh -- another tip is to not overtighten McCoy spraybars  n1.  They can snap in two like a chicken wishbone   :(  But, now I do have a pristine needle with that flexible springy thing intact  ::)

Hey, that would be great if you can make Brodak's  :D. Watt and Will have their "2010 shelter plan" well in hand, so we'll have a comfy "base camp" for the Carolina Gang.

Jim, what would one use to lap the piston? Anything easy to find? I'm thinking of another engine of mine, not the redhead.

I know this is going to sound stupid but i got stuck trying to sand my fuse to shape. I got hung up on the shape on the plans and wasnt sure what i was doing, especially back by the rudder. I sorta got convinced that i had it messed up and quit on it. I really would like to get back to it and finish it up.

I used to use a  Martin Senour product call Buff-Eze, but I don't think they make it anymore. Now I use Dupont Number 7 white polishing compound. I try not to go clear to the top of the cyl. and leave that for the running in. You can also use toothpaste if you want to take hours to do the lapping.
