Title: OS 35 question

 A friend of mine has and loves the OS 35S. After looking thru my engine collection I came across an identical looking OS 35 RC version. My question is although they look identical, other than the venture on his and a carb on mine, are the two engines the same or are they timed differently? Than you...Gene

Hi, Gene.
As far as I know, the engines are identical except for intakes.
I have both (RC and CL) and they appear identical.
Great engines - the only weakness I'm aware of is an occasional connecting rod wearing out.
Mine was replaced when it developed play and the replacement is still good as new.

Theres THREE versions ! ? !* maybe . Threaded for ' jetstream ' muffler back in the port , undrilled and unthreaded ditto ,
and long un etc'd THINGS there , going most of the way out , can drill'n tap em all , of course . But Not right thru, please .

What happens if you drill them clear through? It appears that the drill will hit some fins, and quite possibly break the drill. Clearing the fins away with a Dremel would fix that. Would a clearance hole for a 4-40 or 3mm screw break through into the cylinder bore in the case, bypass, or something vital? I have a few of these in parts, collected cheap at swap meets, in R/C form, a B.Gardner ABC P&L/Rod/wristpin set, and a project in mind for one.  ??? Steve

a ' chap ' once cut up a MINT pre war C 11 Tank , or cut the gas filler out . For his ' coffin ' tank for his chopper . Was too late to murder him .he'd already dunnit .
Mightve saved further mutilations though? , perhaps I shoulda .  VD~

IS IT REALLY NECESARRY .
Although theyre hardly unobtainium , the ' stock ' set up is to just Drill & Tap em , Blind .

Youll have people walking away muttering if you drillem thru , specially with a 1/2 in. bit .  S?P H^^

Yeah, the Pommy tank is a lovely piece of work. Wouldn't have one of those "stealth" tanks on any sort of chopper (if I wanted a chopper, which I really don't). I have seen some that were really beautiful works of art, but a lot more that were just gaudy and impractical. So...

As for bolt heads on the far side of the muffler, since I don't have any mufflers for OS .35S, I'll just have to do what I have to do, and that's that. I'd post pictures for you. I think it's the obvious way to do it for a practical muffler installation, and I am all about being practical. I'll run down in the shop and drill those b'tards right through ASAP!   S?P Steve

I have one that I "drilled the bastard right thru" to install a tongue muffler and it worked just fine. Spotfaced the bypass side for the screwheads to seat. Done. And the bastard runs good, too. Not every engine that gets modified is forever ruined. It is up to the bastard that worked on it to do a good job.

My only concern with drilling and tapping is crashing it and breaking the bolts off in the case or possibly them breaking a chunk out of the port instead of the screw just falling out TJ

Life is full of risks. Especially in the air, flying near the ground. I've seen a fair number of stunt engines come to a harsh demise when crashed on asphalt. We still prefer to fly on asphalt. Happily, none were mine! Clamp-on mufflers are safer from crash damage, but if the rest is toast, it really doesn't matter a lot, does it? Not normally!  H^^ Steve
