Has anyone had experience with the stunt versions of these engines?

I've used the Max S quite a bit but I have some of the others brand new that I would like to try in a Classic plane.

The Tiger is the plain bearing baffle piston version as is the Merco.
The Merco is quite old and has a one-piece crankcase - looks a bit like a VECO.

So, who will offer some advice?

Bob I suspect your Tigre has a big C on the side. Maybe not the best for stunt in the classic sense. It's timed to run pretty fast and was mostly used in profile carrier and slow combat. They considered it a combat engine in the beginning (I think that's what the C is about) but the G21 ball bearing took that slot over. The Mercos are more suited to stunt use and were as popular in Europe as the Fox was here. I plan to put Mercos in at least two classics I'm going to build. I tried a Tigre .35 once in a V-tailed machine I designed long ago and it just knew 'fast'. I could tame it now but....why?

Hi Bob,

Tommy Luper used a ST .35 like you are talking about in a profile for a long time. Gave great stunt runs!

I also have a Red Head Merco .35 which is very much like a Veco .35.

I would use any of them in a .35 size Classic model! All are a bit stronger than a standard Fox .35

Hi Dave,

You are aware that there are actually two models of the ST "C" .35?? The one you are describing does sound exactly like the flat top piston version. There is also a "baffle piston" version with a different sleeve as well as piston. Other than the baffle on the piston, you can't tell them apart.

i have one baffle piston and three flat tops left, the baffle does a great stunt run, ask Tommy!

Hello Robert,
The Merco 35 was a close clone of the Veco 35. They are excellent old fashioned stunt engines. In my experience they are a touch stronger than the OS Max 35S. They also wear a bit better too!. Beware some of the later owners of the Merco brand did make some bad engines. Some of the black head ones can be a bit suspect. The red and orange head versions were good.

I enjoyed excellent service from both the Merco 35 Red Head and the first generation Black Heads. Highly recommended.

Didn't know Bill. I never knew of more than one C. I had one for carrier and couldn't tell you what piston it had. It was one of my G21 combat engines I tried to run in that stunter as a teen. I think a local guy here still has that airplane from around 1974-5.

Hi Dave,

I had no clue of the two versions until I saw Tommy's model. The engine run was so good I looked at the engine when he came down. I asked him what he did to get it to run that way, and he then told me of the "stunt" version. Now that I have had them both, i can attest to the fact that they exist! LOL!!

OS 35s can throw big ends , theres a cruciform oil groove slot on front face , nylon ' T ' - like gudgoen cap , plugged into crankpin to space rod off backplate .

that said , ive worn a few out , though was useing ' any old fuel ' inc. " runnig in " which " we " later learnt had metal polish

in it .
Best a hours gentle use , 1/2 Hr on bench ( or cool air ) before you get carried away .

Id put one NEW in this , which was 54 span , 1.45 kilo . Had to toss the spinner & silencer for a few flights to get it airbourne , then it quickly freed off .
Hauls 55 Oz odd ( give or take a few ) authoritively . Nobler Size stuff .

used a . 20 venturie in the 30 S , & 35 to get a bit more swing . Use GOOD oil in any , 20 % castor 3 % synthetic , and there not nitro mad .

The Merco was ' the ' blitish stunt injun . Useually specified on 60s blitish plans . Warburton Designs , APS ' Mustunt ' etc etc . Said to run strong .

ST 35 S , Via the test , pulss good rpms on the 10 x 6 , which wot allovem like , or maybea 11 x 5 thinned wood , for call air and 65 ft lines .

Maybe I am repeating something said above. I have had all the versions of the ST/35. There is the very powerful version with ball bearings and flat top pistons a huge ports. There were a lot of those made. Then there was the same motor configuration but with out the ball bearing case. It was used for profile combat where the rules did not allow a ball bearing motor. Then there is a motor you describe as plain bearing and piston with baffle normal size liner openings. That is the stunt version. I have two of them converted to Brian Gardner's ABC se up. Stock or ABC they are a very good stunt motor. They are in the same power range as a Fox or OSMax-s but with out the bad rap the Fox gets. and parts do not fail like in the OS rod problems. For a friend I took the old P&L from one of my converted motors and put it in the BB version with the huge ports and cut a slot for the baffle in the head and it made a great BB stunt motor out of it.
I may have the only ABC stunt version as I do not know if anyone besides my self bought the parts from Brian. He may still have some P&L's in stock.

I have had several ST 35C (combat) engines and 3 35C (stunt) engines. I have never been able to get the stunt version to run right. The best one I have run is the combat version with PDP. It will tolerate a rich needle with no problem. The G21 (BB) version is for combat, period. I have never had the G21 (BB) with PDP.
