I have a old 35S. I got it off ebay I think.
Anyway long story short.... it has very little compression.
Is this worth finding a new P&L?
or can I get newer P&L and make it a modern type engine?
Maybe send it to some of you gear heads for a rework? Cost?
Or just sell it for parts and put the $$ toward a new blue engine?

I rootbeard!
The OS .35S was considered by many to be the top dog in its day.
I have no clue that a "new modern" P/S is available. Brian Gardner from "Down Under" made some ABC sets several years ago, but I haven't heard of him making any more since then. The set I got works real good! But no other P/S set fits as a drop in for the original that I know of.
Don;t know what can be done "rework wise" to correct the compression problem if the P/S is worn out. Chroming is great if anyone still does it.
If you want a good "classic style" .35 to run, then the OS .35s is one of those. It will fly a plane with more "authority" than a stock Fox .35 for sure.
The real possibility is that you could possibly buy a good used OS .46LA for less than it would take to "fix" the one you have. And the .46LA will have gobs more usable power than a NIB "stock" OS .35S.

Paul, the engines were good engines. The major problem with those engines though were the conrods. They seemed as if they had some kind of coating on them in which once it wore off the rod was kaplooey. The rod would egg out and then performance was in the toilet. I do recall someone making piston liners for these engines. The cost though was as much as one of the blue engines you described. Its a shame the compression is down as they do work well. I have some of the Max-s.30's. I had one .30 that was keeping up with Fox.35's. It eventually wore out as I ran it pretty hard. The engine would make horrible rod knocking noises when pushed . The .30 is somewhat of a slow runner and even though it shares most of its components with the larger.35 it doesn't share the same kind of run. The .30 is also heavier due to the thicker liner. I had the stock muffler that used a strap around the cylinder head. I found that muffler to work fairly well. I think you answered your own question though with your last statement. Ken

HI Kenneth,
The rod problem was caused by OS using too soft aluminum. Leonard Neumann (SSW) has had several runs of .35S rods made using a much harder aluminum. he has them in stock right now for $15 IIRC.
Randy Smith also stocks Teflon wrist pin pads which take care of the other most common problem of the wrist pin scoring the sleeve.
Unless Paul just has a special project in mind, I would agree with you, and get a .46LA! LOL!!

Rats sure hate I almost had a real winner in my stash. HB~>
Thanks Guys!

Like we all said , Paul, the old .35S was a great engine for its time. But no engine is any good if it ain't right! ;D And i really don't know of a viable fix, within reasonable costs.

It depends on what plane somewhat, If it needs a very li ght motor like the OS 35s then get the parts ,or better look for a new one, they pop up a lot
Also you can stick a Brodak 40 in the ship, or an Enya 30SS
If the plane will tolerate more weight go with a heavier motor like the LS

"Don;t know what can be done "rework wise" to correct the compression problem if the P/S is worn out. Chroming is great if anyone still does it."
Bill Chroming is a terrible option, 90% of the time because the pin boss of the piston will be trashed, and it will be hard to breakin a chromed 35S unless it is in great shape, if so
Then find someone to chrome a new, or really good one

how what about using fuel with a lot of castor oil, would the varnish built up and recover compression?

Hi Martin
Yes using heavy castor oil in old worn motors helps with compression somewhat while running
it depends on how worn...though

Randy, i just acquired a like new Max-s .35. Plan to use it on my Fancy Pants. Should i go ahead and rework the bottom end (conrod and teflon pad)? Do you have these parts in stock? Paul this one off the bay for $22, got lucky for once! Thanks, Ray

A Max-S 30 p/c ass'y will drop straight in, but needs a 30 head of course. I would guess barely detectable reduction in power, and probably more than a worn 35 set.

If it has been ran at all I would not pull it apart, Like new can mean anything. If it is brand new and has never been ran Yes it would be good to add in the 2 parts

Thanks for the info, Randy. I had exactly one engine chromed in the past. It wore out, got it chromed, and it ran better than it did new, lucky I guess.
Didn't say I would do it, just that it is done, that's all. Oge and Blackburn (or Blackwell??) used to do them for people who told me about it.
Happy New year!

Paul, sorry for the hijack! Randy, the engine i speak of has excellent compression and started right up and ran strong on the test bench, if not for the markings where it was at least mounted on a plane i would say it was new. You said if it had been started don't tear it down ,so now my question is how long do i fly it before i worry about the conrod getting worn? Using 10/22 50/50 powermaster.

Sounds good Ty!

HI Paul Hang tuff for a few days. I have converted two of mine to Bristunt P&L and have some parts left over. Let me check them for wear and if any good, I'll mail them of to you. OK? D>K
Hi Ty,
If I knew where the OS P/S is that I took out for the Brian Gardner conversion, I would have offered it to Paul, also! Mine is in very good shape, but it is lost int the pile (but labeled in a Zip Lock) Send him one, he's a good guy. :D

Mailed out the OS today. Run 25% castor oil and 10% nitro, 10 x 5 prop. Lew can make the proper brew as yew knew. LL~
Or 5% nitro............
LL~ LL~ LL~
S?P H^^
And cut it out with the " 'ew " !!!!!!!!!! LL~ LL~
(love ya, Ty!)

He's said he was going to stick in a Bi Slob, so I suggested 10%. The one I sent has lots of "pop" and was a good engine when I ran it. Just needed a bigger engine for the plane it was in. H^^
The "ew" was in connection with Lewis Rankin an d his "Lew's Brew" fuel he mixes. Got silly, sorry. LL~
I loved the "ew" part! LL~
10% is fine, I was just yankin' your chain a bit. ;D (but an OS .35S is blasphemy on a Bi Slob!!! you gotta have a castor oil belching Fox .35 on them! Save that OS .35S for a Classic STUNT plane! LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~)
Happy New Year, Chief!
